Invite Yourself Over To The Selby

September 14, 2009  3:30 pm

It’s been a little over a year since photographer Todd Selby started inviting himself into people’s homes to document their domestic setups for theselby.com. To say thanks to all those involved and to celebrate his new book The Selby Sydney, he threw an intimate potluck dinner at The Smile. No, he doesn’t live there—but since close friend Carlos Quirarte opened the establishment, it could be dubbed his second home. The spread was pretty impressive for a Sunday night get-together: fried chicken, tortillas, and fortune cookies were just some of the snacks guests treated each other to. Sarah from Colette brought Dean & Deluca popcorn; Christina and Swaim Hutson arrived with a red velvet cake. “We didn’t make it,” they confessed. “But I did decorate it myself with M&Ms!,” Christina pointed out. Tie designer Alexander Olch mingled with tattoo artist Scott Campbell while Mark Hunter, a.k.a. the Cobrasnake, snapped photos of the crowd. A posse from Australia, some of whom were featured in the book, was on hand to represent as well. Turns out Selby’s just as good a host as he is a guest—he’ll have another potluck in Tokyo at the end of October. This time he’ll be celebrating the launch of theselby.jp—a Japanese version of the site.
