Designer update

Maria Pinto Joins the Club

September 18, 2009  12:52 pm

Designer Maria Pinto isn’t new to the fashion game; she’s been at it long enough that some of her loyal supporters, who flew in from Chicago, showed up to her Spring presentation wearing “vintage Maria Pinto.” The designer is new to the CFDA, however, and she was in town this week to celebrate. The Windy City native, you may recall, first found herself in the public eye when Michelle Obama stepped out in her dresses during the presidential campaign. Oprah Winfrey and Marcia Gay Harden are also big fans. Inspired by Argentine tango and polo players for Spring, Pinto revealed 30 looks composed of soft chiffons, stretch wools, and buttery leathers. Their clean lines and architectural bent make sense, as she studied painting and sculpture as a student. Although she’s moved on to fashion design, she’s a big art collector, focusing on emerging artists. Does she have a favorite? Lately, she said, she’s been eyeing a sculpture by Ira Sapir. “He came into town for this party, so now I’ll probably have to buy one!”
