Opened And Closed: The Scorecard So Far…

September 30, 2009  10:19 am

First girl out. Grand finale. As we know, in the theater of the runway, those are the starring roles. This season, four girls stood out by taking them most often: new favorite Abbey Lee; veteran Natasha Poly; tiny-named, 15-year-old (!) Jac; and elegant Iris Strubegger. Of course, snagging both is quite the coup, particularly for a major show. Abbey Lee, for one, scored in Milan both opening and closing Fendi and Versace. This seems like a good spot for honorable model mentions beyond this quartet, like Karmen Pedaru, who bookended Narciso Rodriguez’s show. Also of note: fresh face Mirte Maas, who opened Alexander Wang and Donna Karan; Anastasia Kuznetsova, who opened four shows, including Rodarte and 3.1 Phillip Lim; Lindsey Wixson, who also opened four shows, including Prada; and Alla Kostromicheva, who opened three shows, including Jil Sander and Thakoon. As the first day of Paris fashion week gets under way today, we’ll be keeping score. For now, here’s a detailed breakdown of the winners’ circle.

Abbey Lee
Opened: D&G, Matthew Williamson, Twenty8Twelve
Closed: Badgley Mischka, Burberry Prorsum
Both: Fendi, Versace

Natasha Poly
Opened: Carolina Herrera, Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger
Closed: Blumarine, Emilio Pucci, Michael Kors
Both: Altuzarra, Anna Sui

Jac
Opened: Bottega Veneta, Calvin Klein Collection, Derek Lam, Marni,
Emilio Pucci
Closed: Alexander Wang
Both: Etro

Iris Strubegger
Opened: Aquilano.Rimondi, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta
Closed: Alberta Ferretti, Bottega Veneta, Isaac Mizrahi
Both: Zero + Maria Cornejo

  1. Meenal and Romney, I actually dislike lists like yours. It has no use, If your on the catwalk at whatever fashion house that’s important for you career. Not if you’re the opening and closing model are at a show. Look to Gemma Ward, already famous for some years and then suddenly (the master) Mr. Lagerfeld gave her the chance and honor to open and close his fashion show at Paris in (I think) 2007 spring/summer collection. I’m only happy that you range Natasha Poly so high. A veteran you’ve both said and your right. One of the models I see gladly back each season.

  2. these figures are very helpful, although of course they don’t tell the whole story - but certainly ms. abbey lee is having a triumphant and well-deserved sweep, crowning a long (more than 5 seasons!) and always-prominent runway career - i don’t think that the heavenly ms. jac is actually standing out too much from her peers in my loose category, “hot, new but already-prominent” - for example, katie fogarty and ginta lapina are having roaring seasons, partly, in the latter case, due to her thrilling resemblance to no.1 runway draw, ms. natasha poly - as for the latter, very gracious model, her season is inevitably a little slower than the last, reflecting that she and other superstars (magdalena fracowiak, lily donaldson, sasha pivovarova, vlada roslyalova, etc.) are simply being crowded out - ms. strubegger can claim to be having the most successful season of anyone, reflecting the current, curious trend towards the sterner look, e.g., karolyn wolter, alla kostromicheva (also hugely successful season), iselin stero (coasting through her triumphant 2d comeback season), ubiquitous liu wen (maybe the most appearances of all?), jamie bochert, the great (and super-friendly tweeter) heidi mount, even gracious tara gill, even (under the surface) charlotte di calypso, etc. \,,/
