The Ladies Love Luigi Scialanga

September 18, 2009  10:42 am

Are there any signs of the recession lifting in London? Well, if the minor frenzy that broke out over dinner at jewelry designer Luigi Scialanga’s private view is any indication—yep. Scialanga, a Roman former architect, does what jewelry expert and talent-spotter Vivienne Becker describes as “sophisticated barbaric.” “I’ve had my eye on him for ages. I really ought to treat myself to something,” she said. The private view, at the David Gill Galleries, drew Allegra Hicks (who showed up with a Scialanga coral-beaded cuff she’s loved for years on her wrist), Ronnie Cooke-Newhouse, Sydney Ingle-Finch, Nathalie Hambro, Vicky Sarge, and many other aficionados, who were soon running Gill ragged, pulling out one-of-a-kind rings and neckpieces from the vitrines as the evening took on a try-and-buy turn. Giambattista Valli, who’d broken off from fittings in Paris to support his longtime collaborator, watched with amusement as Andrea Dellal, in a white sheath dress with her daughter Charlotte in tow, hijacked a neckpiece with a jade green Venetian glass lion’s head as its centerpiece and sat down to dinner. “Look, that’s my dress she’s wearing; looks great, no?” he laughed, before noting that his London stores—Harrods, Matches, Browns, and Dover Street Market—are running so low on Valli stock, they’re pleading for reorders. Things are looking up, then? When the item’s right, yes.
