Tickets To Ride

September 13, 2009  10:56 pm

Fashion designers don’t only hang with models, put on shows, and party. There’s a lot of hard work that goes into the making of clothes: deadlines to meet, customs issues to grapple with…but there are perks. For designer Diego Binetti and Leifsdottir creative director Johanna Uurasjarvi, one upside is travel. Both ventured East recently and translated their impressions of faraway places into their Spring collections. Binetti looked a bit misty-eyed when recalling his walks along the Mekong River and the time he spent with monks, details of whose asymmetrically draped habits were worked into a collection that opened with a jangly necklace-festooned dress. Uurasjarvi, who avidly collects textiles, made prints that mixed elements from Japanese and Indian motifs—think cherry prints mingling with paisleys.
