Katherine Fleming Goes Fishing

October 15, 2009  2:04 pm

With little fuss, Katherine Fleming has performed the impressive feat of making her bag collection into one of the labels to hoist upon your shoulder. Pay attention and you’ll spot look her abstract, interlocking Ks wherever stylish girls are found. For spring, the Miami native turned her gaze seaward. (Actually, now that I think about it, it’s an aesthetic synergy with her besties Proenza Schouler’s scuba motif.) Fleming reprised her modern ladylike classics with vivid ocean floor-inspired skins.

There’s a sort of rosy bronze metallic that she calls Goldfish Python (pictured, top left) and an unexpected white matte python that looks almost softly brushed with shades of blue, called Ocean Batik (pictured, top right). Other leathers have a treatment that gives them the subtlest iridescent hint. It’s particularly lovely in a pale blush hue (pictured, bottom right). You can find them come spring at all three Opening Ceremony stores, Barneys New York, Liberty of London, and TSUM in Moscow. But if you’re dying to get a jump-start, Fleming has been invited by Fendi to set up a pop-up shop during Art Basel Miami Beach, where she’ll be selling spring bags and inviting artists to interpret her slim Jane clutch bag for works that will be sold to benefit the Bas Fisher Invitational.
