Blasblog: La Mamounia Rocks the Casbah

November 30, 2009  1:52 pm

Says noted anthropologist Jacquetta Wheeler: “Moroccans by nature love to party. So give them a real reason to celebrate and a budget, and we’ve got a show on our hands.” She wasn’t kidding. No expense was spared and no partygoer—a roll that included Wheeler, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Orlando Bloom, and Adrien Brody—disappointed at the weekend reopening of La Mamounia, Marrakech’s legendary hotel. (Just getting those celebs to northern Africa must’ve cost a small fortune.) The entertainment included opera singer José Carreras (Gwynnie’s favorite part) and a Cirque du Soleil spectacle that involved a contortionist, feathered exotic dancers, fire-eaters, and men wrapped in Christmas lights running up and down the sides of the hotel (Aniston’s fave), but with a crowd this multitalented, no surprise that the guests tried their hand at performing, too. Every night ended at the leopard-heavy downstairs lounge, the Churchill Bar, where Daria Werbowy, Matthew Williamson, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, and Carine Roitfeld belted out everything from Grease show tunes to Sarah McLaughlin. “Leopard carpet, cognac, and a piano? I think I found my new favorite bar ever,” Werbowy said. Next stop, Moroccan Idol?
