Going Greener

November 11, 2009  12:21 pm

A public service announcement from Alternative Apparel founder Greg Alterman: Green is good, but some green is better. At the launch for the line’s new Think Green T-shirt, Alterman noted that the current definition of “green” is, to put it nicely, flexible. “I just got fed up with how easy it was for people to label stuff ‘eco,’ ” he explained. “I was like, eco according to who?” Alternative Apparel is going transparent about its bona fides: The Think Green tee is made of a specially developed blend of organic cotton, recycled polyester, and naturally occurring rayon, and is, in full disclosure, semi-sustainable. (An honest distinction, we have to say.) “We decided, you know what, let’s do this right. Let’s be honest about the steps we’re taking,” Alterman continued. A laudable goal—but luckily, the evening wasn’t really about lecturing or hand-wringing. Nolan Gerard Funk, who is currently playing Conrad Birdie on Broadway, was just one of the VIPs who made it out to the Hudson Hotel library to get down with the AA gang. Contemplating global warming is heavy, but no one says you can’t also have a little fun while you’re at it.
