Yea, Nay, Or Eh: Jennifer Lopez Hugs The Curves

November 23, 2009  3:59 pm

It only takes a quick stroll through any fashion-forward boutique to realize that designers and retailers are still in the throes of body-con mania. What did we wear out at night before thigh-grazing hems and Lycra blends became de rigueur? You won’t find the answer on the red carpet, as starlets the world over are still flaunting the figure-hugging dresses en masse. Witness Jennifer Lopez in Spring 2010 Gucci at last night’s 2009 American Music Awards. We have to hand it to her—the singer looks great in a difficult dress—but is the look perhaps too challenging? The overly slashed frock paired with matchy-matchy platform heels is a bit much, even given the, ahem, creative dress code at music industry awards shows. What do you think? Is J. Lo’s latest offering a chart-topper or a flop?

  1. First. Do love the dress. Do not love however, the shoes, the earrings or the make-up. To me this makes her look exactly like what she is: someone who’s been out of the show biz game for a bit and now that she’s back wants to try to fit in with the cool kids (Gaga, B, etc.) I do like J.Lo, but I think that for her comeback, she should have gone with what she does best, uncomplicated sexy.

  2. I think Jennifer Lopez looks amazing. Considering her age, that she’s had twins etc… she’s positively glowing.

  3. J.LO looks magnificent, but I would have opted for a different look for her. The dress would have been more appropriate if she went with a completely different look that parallels with her age.

the updo, make-up, accessories and shoes all have to go!

I would have stuck with her usual soft shimmer glow look with diamond studs and basic pumps so that the focus goes on the artistic embellishments of the dress.

  6. Lopez has the confidence that is for sure, but this ensemble (plus the hoops and WHITE! platforms) just screams “jenny from the corner down the block” to me, and not in a good way. But can’t deny shes got a bod!

  7. Nay!Nay!Nay! Although I love the dress and it looks good on her, I really do not fancy her accessories. Too much: the earrings and the shoes!?! Désastre!!! Worse is the hair. Why not have a sleek high ponytail or loose straight hair parted in the middle. Even graphic bangs. Something taht doesn’t look like kitty ears.

  8. Since the dress already makes a bold statement, I think she should have left everything else very minimal. Maybe lose the accessories and opt for shoes that show more ankle (may make her look a bit taller). Regardless of these points, she still looks fabulous.

  9. The color is so off putting on her making her look plump and all those accessories make her look more like a wannabe fashionista trying hard to impress rather than the seasoned one she is supposed to be.

  11. nay! the shoes ruin everything. but perhaps with an overtheknee boot this would work. too much skin, too much white!

  12. I love the dress and I think the hair do is right. Since the dress has cutouts, a short hair do doesn’t compete with it. I would suggest a lighter make-up, specially in her eyes. The shoes could’ve been different, and have a color. Its not perfect, but its very pleasant to look at. Unlike some other artists whose styling choices are always questionable. Good to see her back!

  14. Not for me… but they look like they are totally having fun with fashion! They look great!

  15. Her dress goes more solid towards the bottom, with less holes. The shoes have too many small holes, which breaks the whole concept. Perhaps a pair of simple black shoes that reveal her ankles must go better with her neat black hair on top. And with small white triangular earrings her white hip could be more supported? What do you think?

  17. She ruins a sexy look by adding that heinous hairdo and too much matchy shoes. The dress looks great on her though.
