Yea, Nay, Or Eh: The Tom Ford Effect On The Spring Runways

November 5, 2009  5:30 pm

Tom Ford’s debut movie, A Single Man, makes its U.S. premiere at the American Film Institute Festival tonight in Los Angeles. We’re sure it’ll be an insanely glam affair, like everything the designer-turned-filmmaker touches. We wish we could be there, and we don’t think we’re the only ones under Ford’s spell. Remember the killer white jersey column dress with hip cutout that Georgina Grenville originally wore back in 1996? We detected several riffs on the unforgettable look on the Spring runways. From left to right, there’s Emilio Pucci, Gucci (by Frida Giannini), Versace, and a 2004 update on the gown from Ford’s Gucci swan song. It’s hard to compete with the simplicity of the original, but our vote goes to the Pucci. Which do you prefer?

  1. Just had a flashback of Georgina Grenville wearing Tom Ford’s Gucci cut out dress in that AbFab episode. And those Mario Testino photos… to die for. Ok, back to 2009! My vote is for Gucci Spring 2010. Yeah, its very similar to the original but instead of 70s, its more futuristic/tribal/ dare I say Mad Max at a disco?

  2. My vote too goes for Gucci’s spring 2010 collection, those metal clasps and other bag hardware fused into clothes made of futuristic fabric added a lot of oomp to the entire collection!

  3. Actually I love all the dressess you showed us, but one is my real favorite. People who know me are not surprised, but I prefer the dress of Donatella, the technical effects are marvelous and her late brother Gianni can be proud on her. I also have to say that with her latest spring collection she did a great job for the younger woman. What she showed us is really very wearable for the younger woman, maybe inspired by her own daughter. But nonetheless also the other designers brought more color and fantasy in their collections. A big applause for the designs/patterns/details this time, they werent afraid to use colors. I was really excited about a lot of designers. Arrivederci

  4. I have to cast my vote for the Versace dress. I just love how modern the dress looks and the details of the cutouts are impeccable.
