Spend Thrift

There are a million great new things to pick up this holiday season—check out’s gift guide for just a few of them—but if you’re not opposed to a few gently used pieces, there are good bargains to be had as well. Last night, we headed down to one of New York’s best thrift stores, Housing Works, where Glamour‘s Suze Yalof Schwartz was hosting a chic shopping event. (She’d also curated pieces from the nonprofit’s archives; as with all purchases at Housing Works, proceeds go to benefit homeless New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.) Steals abounded, from a Vera Wang L.B.D. for $110 to a faux-fur leopard-print coat for just $45. A great selection of vintage jewelry—innovatively retooled by Housing Works’ in-house accessories guru Maria Eisen—was all under $100. And while Schwartz liked digging through the piles to find just the right pieces, throwing her own fête was a big draw, too. “Host a party where I can invite all my friends so they can shop at these amazing prices and it goes to a good cause? Of course I said yes,” the editor declared. “Besides, just hosting is fun. It’s like having a wedding without all the stress!”
