This Old Thing? Vintage Shopping in Soho

December 15, 2009  12:04 pm

With just ten shopping days left until Christmas, the frantic race for the shiniest, newest gift (for yourself or others) is officially in full force. One way to dodge the mania? Go for the old and historic instead. Two Soho boutiques are throwing vintage shopping fêtes this week, where you can scoop up the best of the past, help out some do-gooding charities, and knock back a flute or two of Champagne while you’re at it.

The nonprofit SoHo Partnership recently opened Use Your Head, a designer resale boutique, and is celebrating some very generous recent donations with a cocktail event tonight. It’s good to have friends in high—that is, 10012—places. Seventies-era accessories and ready to wear from Courrèges, Lanvin, Alaïa, Vuitton, and Ferré are mixed in with modern pieces from the likes of Phi pre-fall ‘09, and there are some unbelievable steals in the lot. Keep an eye out for vintage legend Tiffany Dubin’s pristine Fendi fur, just one of the many items she’s rumored to have gifted the store. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the Partnership’s homelessness outreach programs.

Or, if a pedigreed past isn’t of concern when it comes to your vintage, head to the Madewell shop on Broadway for Refinery 29’s Very Vintage Holiday Party. The R29 editors spent months thrifting their way through the tri-state area, and their spoils—everything from a YSL jacket to a leopard-print evening bag—are yours for the taking. Indie pop band Au Revoir Simone will be on hand to deejay, and wearing your own vintage outfit gets you 20 percent off Madewell purchases that night. After all this, goodwill is just the icing on the cake—but you’ll be glad to know proceeds from the vintage pieces will go to BARC, the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition.

Holiday cocktail party at Use Your Head, Tuesday, December 15, 6 to 9 p.m., at 262 Mott Street; RSVP to rsvp2useyourhead@gmail.com. Very Vintage Holiday Party, Wednesday, December 16, 7 to 9 p.m., Madewell Soho, 486 Broadway; RSVP to nycevents@madewell1937.com.
