Milan Menswear: The Granddad Moment
It’s a total granddad moment, but all the young dudes who insist they want to wear suits have to suffer it. The briefcase is back. Valextra, one of Italy’s more cultish makers of leather goods, insists there’s an increased interest in the utterly masculine briefcase, versus the more ambiguous tote or messenger satchel of yore. (Bag ambiguity—we have lived to see the day!) They call the style Diplomatica (picture a Cary Grant sprint through the U.N. Building), but that retro tinge is counteracted by the new version for next season, which closes with a crisply moderne magnetic snap. It’s sharp in tan leather with green piping and stitching, but if you’re going to go there, we think nothing beats the classic Diplomatica, updated for fall in a rich burgundy tone called marasca.
