Designer update

Rag’s New Riches

January 12, 2010  1:29 pm

Rag & Bone is the latest label to go back to basics. This month, the brand launches three companion collections to its primary line, Rag & Bone/JEAN, Rag & Bone/KNIT, and Rag & Bone/SHIRT, each comprising wardrobe staples executed in super stripped-down (though typically finessed) Rag style. “Simplicity is key,” explains co-designer David Neville. “We’ll continue to evolve these collections, but in essence, this is about creating a distinct space within our brand for items that work as the foundation of a wardrobe.”

Marketingese aside, the point is clear: unfussy must-haves safe from the fluctuations of trends. JEAN launches with three no-nonsense styles (the skinny, the straight, and the stiletto boot) in a range of colors; KNIT brings tees in a variety of cuts and lengths; and SHIRT offers seven washed-cotton variations on the theme of men’s-style shirting. (Girls on the lookout for the perfect chambray top, look no further.) Neville says that he expects Rag & Bone to launch additional companion collections soon—ones that could include favorites such as blazers, for example. If that all sounds a little, well, basic, for the label’s more fashion-forward fans, never fear—the guys aren’t going vanilla. “This definitely gives us room to be more experimental and exuberant on the runway,” Neville promises. Watch this space.
