Tommy Hilfiger has his eye on the art world this year, it seems—first he designed limited-edition footwear using Keith Haring’s dynamic graffiti prints (the range is currently available at Colette), and now he’s signed up as the fashion sponsor for the new Whitney Biennial. To kick off the 75th Biennial, Hilfiger threw a fashionable (what else?) preview after-party at his Fifth Avenue flagship last night. Along with the usual model-waiters afoot, art-loving designers like Cynthia Rowley and Johan and Marcella Lindeberg checked out the multilevel space, including a digital “photo booth” by MVS Studio last installed, fittingly, at Japan fashion week.
Rosario Dawson, in town from Los Angeles, also made it despite the rainy night. “In L.A. you have to drive to the museum, which can be a real pain. All I ever see are billboards,” the actress chatted on the museum scenes. “Here, you could walk past, say, the Tenement Museum, and be like, ‘Hey, let’s check that out.’ That’s just something amazing that’s so New York.” Turns out the native New Yorker doesn’t only appreciate art but does a bit of dabbling herself. “I paint. I remember the first time, it was so therapeutic. I was experimenting with these watercolors and I really got into it and kept layering on color,” Dawson explained. “Sometimes, I’ll take it out and look at it and be like, ‘I did that? It’s actually pretty good!’ ” she added with a laugh. Good enough to be an addition to the Whitney anytime soon? “Rosario paints? That’s great!” Adam D. Weinberg, the Whitney Museum’s director, enthused. “I would have to take a look at her work first, of course,” he said. “I mean, you would ask to look at her fashion designs first, right?”
