Go West, Thom Browne

The Mayor wore Thom Browne? Alas, not yet—but San Francisco’s dapper leader, Gavin Newsom, and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, were on hand to celebrate Browne’s entrée into the SF scene with the second standalone Black Fleece store. Mayor and Mrs. Newsom (the latter clad in a slim black suit, black beret, and Louboutin heels) hosted a dinner at the Fillmore Street shop, where old garde and new sat down to a dinner for 75. They included Google VP Marissa Mayer, eco-expert Zem Joaquin, Maggie Rizer, and a Traina or two.
The man of the hour, dressed as always in his trademark gray suit, mused on the charms of the city by the bay. San Francisco is “the perfect market,” Browne said, noting that the line had been especially successful in the downtown Brooks Brothers store. Finding the right location was key, and tony Fillmore Street fits the bill. (We’ll call it a sly nod at the line’s classics-revamped style that it faces the Junior League of San Francisco.) Browne spent the day not with clothes, but indulging his antiquing hobby. “Travel is the only time I can rest,” he admitted ruefully.
Brooks Brothers CEO Claudio Del Vecchio, for one, seemed content to keep him busy. Initially, Del Vecchio said, the Black Fleece line had been conceived with a cast of rotating guest designers, but the partnership with Browne proved too good to let go. “It was supposed to be a capsule line,” he went on. “Now [Black Fleece] is its own brand.” For proof, one only had to look at the guests, many of whom showed up in Black Fleece. Actor and mayoral brother-in-law Geoff Callan happily posed for pictures in eye-catching red, white, and blue plaid pants.
