Ryan McGinley Goes Hollywood

If clotheslessness has this many people in the fashion world talking, there’s likely one guy behind it: Mr. Ryan McGinley, whose latest exhibition, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, opens tonight at New York City’s Team Gallery. McGinley’s up to some of his usual tricks, stripping down eligible, hip young things of all stripes, but where older work depicted the interaction between them and the great outdoors, the new show keeps them in the studio, creating intimate, unflinching portraits. T Magazine sat down with McGinley to discuss process (there’s an actual casting scout, who farms music festivals and art schools to find models), inspiration (the artist’s eight brothers and sisters), and training (less than you might expect). For a guy known for grit, the pictures are more polished than ever—”I did want them to feel Hollywood,” he says—but there’s no mistaking the McGinley touch. Consider the interview your homework assignment before you brave the crowds this evening for a glimpse at the latest.
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere opens tonight at Team Gallery, 83 Grand St., NYC, (212) 279-9219, www.teamgal.com, and runs through April 17.
