David Yurman Lightens Up

May 7, 2010  4:00 pm

“I feel like I’m having my bar mitzvah all over again,” jewelry designer David Yurman joked last night at the grand opening party of his new Madison Avenue flagship, the Townhouse. “Almost everyone here is a friend who has watched me grow through the past 30 years.” A bevy of Southern belles even came north for the occasion, effervescent in their post-Derby afterglow. Between kissing cheeks and talking shop, Yurman revealed he’s a proud horse owner himself, brandishing photos of two of his thoroughbreds, Big Iron and I’m a Man in Command.

“It’s a townhouse—it has the feeling of long and narrow. The challenge was, how do we open it up?” Yurman said of the new space. Architect Michael Gabellini’s answer was to let the light in: A skylight above and behind the boutique’s back winding staircase organically illuminates each floor. But Yurman’s own favorite feature of the new location is a window display that features lights, mirrors, plants—and no jewelry. “Michael and I looked at 19 different window options,” he explains. “My favorite was the one with mounds of dirt and a wall of plants and without a necklace in sight. Nature is its own art form.”

Of course, so are jewels. Emmy Rossum, a vintage jewelry fiend, was making her first Yurman purchase—a pair of garnet drop earrings—that night, while Michelle Trachtenberg made a beeline for the diamonds. “I’ve been looking at colored gemstones and this amazing pair of diamond-encrusted hoops,” she said. “Diamonds really are a girl’s best friend.” And, it should go without saying this weekend, a mom’s, too.
