Dries Does Denim

Dries Van Noten’s Spring ’11 collection hit the runway today and built on the ultra-wearable collection he showed for Fall. But as much as it picked up some of the threads of what came before, there was one element that felt brand-new for Van Noten’s womenswear: denim. (Historians, correct me if I’m wrong, but I can’t think of a time Dries has shown denim on the women’s catwalk—certainly not in any recent season.) True to the DVN style, it was introduced without much fanfare: Blink and you might miss that Shu Pei Qin is wearing a killer pair of swingy, wide-legged jeans (above). Or the sleeves on Nimue’s boat-necked tunic top—they’re white denim, and at the cuffs, a worn-in indigo blue like your favorite, age-old jean jacket (top). The man must have denim on the brain at the moment—it showed up on the men’s runway for Spring ’11, in punky bleached jackets and pants, too.
