Maria, Angelena

Considering the canopy print for pre-fall was created from a photo of the sun setting over Melrose Place, it feels fitting that Maria Cornejo opened her new boutique in Los Angeles. “The way the clothes are and my sensibility in fashion is very laid-back, and I think it really fits the L.A. lifestyle,” the designer said at a fête to toast her newest Zero + Maria Cornejo location last night. Angelenas like Katherine Ross, Louise Roe, and Liseanne Frankfurt, all on hand, seemed to agree. They mingled in the new shop, one minimal enough to let the architectural collections speak for themselves. “There’s enough design in the clothes that the store doesn’t have to super-design-y,” Cornejo (inset, right, with Magda Berliner) explained. “It’s an organic space, and personally, I like spaces like this that can morph and keep constantly changing.”

Fall 2010 was on the racks, but in the spirit of change and evolution, Cornejo already had Fall 2011 in mind. As with seasons past, pics snapped on the designer’s iPhone will eventually become the collection’s prints, and her current mood board suggests the beachy, California state of mind isn’t one she’s abandoning anytime soon. “There’s a picture of the end of summer on my board right now that’s going to be a print,” she said. “It’s this great, nostalgic moment of three girls dancing on the beach at dusk. And since they’re all taken with my iPhone, they’re all very personal.”
