From Venessa Arizaga, Couture-Crafted Jewels
Minimalist, this is not. Launched last season at Opening Ceremony, Venessa Arizaga’s jewelry has a winning everything-but-the-kitchen-sink quality, what with the multicolored stones, thread, piled chains, and handfuls of charms that adorn her pieces. Her second collection, for Spring ’11, may be even more eye-popping. “There’s a different twist to the color,” Arizaga says. “And rhinestones, so there’s a bit more shine.” It’s a far cry from the ladylike looks the Parsons grad created as a member of the ready-to-wear design teams at Tuleh, Carolina Herrera, and Zac Posen.
But, as Arizaga explains, it was her experience as a creator of luxe garments that allowed her to develop her jewelry’s signature construction, which relies on couture sewing techniques. “I was doing the jewelry as a hobby, and at one point, when I was on vacation in Puerto Rico, I decided to incorporate some shells I found on the beach,” Arizaga recalls. “But I didn’t want to use traditional hardware closures, so I started threading things together.” Many bits and bobs later, Arizaga is making jewelry full-time, and finding a ready audience for her wares: Net-a-Porter just picked up the line for spring.
