Sophia Kokosalaki’s Fashion Week Diary

In the lead-up to New York fashion week, designers go through hundreds of behind-the-scenes preparations to arrive at the completed show. This NYFW, we’ve sweet-talked a few of them into giving us an exclusive peek behind the curtain as they cast, score, style, and ready their presentations. Next up: Sophia Kokosalaki, the creative director of Diesel Black Gold.

“Every person in the team is just as important as every other; this is why communication is key. I always work very closely with my seamstresses.”

“I always try to maintain a fun aspect in these intense pre-show days. I try not to overdo it with the coffee—that helps.”

“We worked all day on castings—I like to see and meet all the new girls. Sometimes I wonder how the young ones cope with the late-night fittings and the endless go-sees around town.”

“There are so many elements to take care of when putting together a look. Everything has to be considered—although I am well aware it could go unnoticed by the audience.”

“Although fashion week can be very demanding, I enjoy the interaction with talented and creative people across so many different fields.”
