Are You Mad For Plaid, Too?
Seems the whole world is hung up on the royal wedding, but here at Style.com, we’ve got McQueen fever. (The Costume Institute’s exhibit, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, opens next week.) And we couldn’t help noticing that the Fall runways were blanketed in tartan, a motif that held a totemic appeal for McQueen dating back to his 1995 Highland Rape collection. While plaid is nothing new (just take a stroll down Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg), designers are kicking the classic pattern up a notch. At Rag & Bone, David Neville and Marcus Wainwright paired a fringed kilt with a white leather bomber, while Carven‘s Guillaume Henry showed a long-sleeved shift in the stuff with nude lace accents at the bust for added intrigue. Combining different checks is a surefire attention grabber—Oscar de la Renta cut a curve-hugging evening gown in a patchworked plaid print, and a girl wearing mismatched tartan caught Tommy Ton‘s eye in the Tuileries.
