Christophe Decarnin Is Out At Balmain
Eyebrows raised last month when Balmain designer Christophe Decarnin was a no-show at the label’s Fall ’11 presentation—and higher still when rumors began to circulate that his absence was due to a stay at a psychiatric hospital. (The official story had it that he had been treated for psychiatric issues and was under doctor’s orders not to attend.) Stylist Melanie Ward took control over the show (and, some said, the entire collection’s design) in his stead.
Today, the house announced that Decarnin is departing the label that, since his appointment as creative director in 2007, he had helped revamp. In a brief statement, CEO Alain Hivelin said, “Since 1945, the house of Pierre Balmain has been one of the leading French and international luxury brands. Christophe Decarnin’s work with the house’s design team contributed to the success that the brand has enjoyed in recent years.”
His successor has not yet been named.
