Meet The Muse: Emma Summerton

-------

Girl-about-town Natalie Joos spends her days casting for shows like ADAM and Yigal Azrouël and editorials for the likes of Mario Sorrenti and Mariano Vivanco, but her passion is vintage clothing. Joos’ blog, Tales of Endearment spotlights her “Muses,” impeccably styled girls and guys who share her secondhand obsession. In a new partnership with Style.com, Tales of Endearment’s subjects discuss their shoots right here on Style File.

Of her photo shoot with Joos, fashion photographer Emma Summerton says, “I think she really liked that I had so much stuff.” Summerton adds, “She said it was like being in a vintage shop.” In the London-based photographer’s new apartment, Joos found a healthy collection of seventies prints, wide-leg trousers, and Piers Atkinson hats. When Summerton isn’t shooting for the likes of i-D or W, she’s digging through Alfies in London and charity shops in search of silver bracelets and caftans to add to her well-curated closet. Here, she talks with Style.com what inspires her when she’s “vintage therapy” shopping.

What projects are you working on right now?
I have a few shoots I am prepping for right now that will hit right after the shows. I love this part of the season, looking at the shows, looking at books, art, films, researching, and just being open to inspiration for the coming season.

How does your work as a photographer influence your personal style?
I am always searching for characters to create in my work and get to see so many wonderful people, places, and things. Depending on what is inspiring me at the time for shoots, I might dig out something in my wardrobe that I forgot about and get into it again—it will set off a idea for a shoot. I love fashion, I enjoy dressing up and playing with ideas, and always have, even before I knew it could be part of your working life.

How would you describe your style?
“Eclectic” is one way of putting it, but basically all over the place usually depending on what mood I’m in.

Do you have a signature item that you always wear?
I usually wear a hat. As I told Natalie, they are the cherry on top of a look for me! And I love piling on jewelry—mostly silver bracelets and rings which I wear everyday.

Do you collect certain kinds of vintage pieces?
I collect all sorts, whatever grabs me, but I love vintage fabric, especially a great print or crepe. I am obsessed with vintage hats, silver jewelry, and vintage handbags. I love finding dresses from the thirties and forties that are one-offs, privately made for someone, hand-finished, and hardly worn. I do love a seventies dress, too, and also have a fleet of caftans.

Finish this thought: What’s old is new again when…
You put it on and it makes you feel great!
