For years, I’ve been thinking about getting a Longchamp duffel bag and I couldn’t decide what color to get. Once, while in the Caribbean, I saw a chic French woman carrying a turquoise number, and the minute I arrived back in the city, I tried to purchase it, with no luck—it was no longer available in that shade. Black was going to be my ultimate decision because it’s practical and simple. I kept reminding myself that it would match all of my luggage and for years to come, it would never go out of style. Although that would be a smart choice, it’s rare I make my purchases based on that, so I left the store with no bag in hand. Luckily, one of my favorite designers, Mary Katrantzou, has provided the perfect answer to my Longchamp quest. Her new collection for the label, launching exclusively at Colette on January 23, combines her signature prints with Longchamp’s classic silhouettes. I used mine when I traveled home for the holidays—it stands out nicely among the sea of black luggage. My daughter Gloria was toting it around for a while and liked it so much, now she’s calling it her luggage. It looks like I will have put up a fight to get it back.
