Dover Street Market, Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garçons’ multibrand London megastore, is one of the globe’s best retail destinations. Comme CEO Adrian Joffe has hinted that one may be coming to New York in the next few years. But shoppers in Kawakubo’s native Japan got lucky first: Last month, the designer opened a six-story Dover Street Market flagship in Tokyo’s Ginza district. The store may connect, in an unprecedented move, to a Uniqlo flagship, but it maintains the air of “beautiful chaos” (in Joffe’s words) DSM always strives for. There are dedicated spaces for Junya Watanabe, Balenciaga, Rick Owens, Maison Martin Margiela, all of the CDG lines, Marni, and 10 Corso Como; those not headed to Tokyo anytime soon can rubberneck below.
