Charlotte Olympia’s Glamazon Jungle
The story we are hearing all week from designers is that stores are requesting more and more products for Resort delivery, and the sell-throughs are higher and higher during this particular season. And for her part, Charlotte Olympia delivered—her latest collection of accessories, on display at the Carlyle Hotel this week, filled three whole rooms. It was so extensive, I found it hard to keep my attention on one pair before I was distracted by another, each one better than the next.
In the entrance room was the Encore collection, including the Dolly (the designer’s famous platform pumps), the Paloma (evening platform pumps), and the Kitty flats. The far back room was the bridal footwear—for sure the most exquisite bridal shoes you can possibly find in the market—classic but with an edge (think: leopard print). In the largest room, I found her main collection, called Glamazon, inspired by her Brazilian roots. There were fuchsia, orange, and turquoise shoes and bags with “Senhor do Bonfim” ribbon (colored wish ribbons) prints; Baianas’ faces made up the little pouches inside the designer’s famous Pandora’s clutches; and large tote bags with Ipanema and Copacabana-inspired prints. Wood heels were intricately etched with the country’s landscape on them. Just looking at the accessories made me think about how much fun it would be to wear them. As a Brazilian, I can safely say I can’t recall seeing a collection that illustrates the country as well as Olympia’s. Each piece is unique—playful and young yet sophisticated, just like Charlotte herself.
