Greta Gerwig On Sex, Her New Woody Allen Film, And More

Where most romantic comedies end, Lola Versus (starring Greta Gerwig) begins, complete with the precious montage of the marriage proposal. From there, the film gets so tenderly awkward that a sex scene set to Ani DiFranco doesn’t even seem off. “Is that embarrassing? Because I’ve probably also had sex to Ani DiFranco,” said Gerwig (pictured, right) at last night’s Cinema Society premiere in New York. “And, weirdly, I dated a boy who loved her—he’s magical.”

Gerwig knows about magic. The 28-year-old actress has risen from indie film ingenue to major name, showing up next in Woody Allen’s new movie To Rome With Love. “Being chosen by Woody Allen, it’s like being chosen by God!” Gerwig shares her adoration with Zoe Lister-Jones, who co-wrote and directed Lola Versus, with boyfriend Darryl Wein, and plays Gerwig’s best friend in the film. “We were inspired by odd seventies comedies,” explained Lister-Jones before the screening at the SVA Theatre. “And I grew up on Woody Allen, who has this unmistakable take on modern relationships that I’ll always love.”

The idol chatter continued at the Boom Boom Room after-party, where Prabal Gurung, Noah Baumbach, and Parker Posey mingled with the cast. “I’m going to be Patti Smith!” said The Borgias‘ Mickey Sumner (pictured, left), daughter of Sting, who has just been picked to play the rock priestess in Randall Miller’s CBGB. “I’m terrified! There’s no one better than her.”
