Yigal Azrouël’s NYFW Diary

In the leadup to New York fashion week, designers go through hundreds of behind-the-scenes preparations to arrive at the completed show. This NYFW, we’ve sweet-talked a few of them into giving us an exclusive peek behind the curtain as they cast, score, style, and ready their presentations. Up next: Yigal Azrouël.

“Model casting for the women’s Spring 2013 runway show has officially begun. It’s always exciting to see the girls who were in my show last season and meet some new faces. We were excited to work with casting director Piergiorgio Del Moro this season for the first time.”

“Fittings with our stylist Sara Moonves. This part of the process is always really exciting because the clothes start to come to life and take on the energy of the girl.”

“Adjusting this season’s custom-made sandals was trickier than I thought.”

“Working with the girls during fittings really gives the collection a new life. When they walk, the movement of the fabric adds a new dimension to the clothing. This fabric was custom developed for the show. It was an exciting moment to finally see it on a form.”

“Establishing the run-of-show order is one of the most thoughtful and hardest parts of my pre-show prep. I really need to think about how I am going to present my story and make sure that each girl really takes energy from the girl before and after. I don’t just focus on the first look and the finale; there’s really so much thought that goes into the placement of every look.”

“I’m really excited to be working with makeup artist Francelle this season. We wanted to go for a fresh, clean look—something effortless and refined.”

“Hairstylist James Pecis documenting the look. Who needs Polaroids when you have an iPad?”
