A Hero With A New York State of Mind

“I have known Candy since before there was AIDS,” Diane von Furstenberg told about her longtime friend and colleague Candy Pratts Price at last night’s My Hero gala. Robert Duffy chimed in, “I’ve known her that long as well—even though she’s only 42.”

Aid for AIDS, which donates HIV/AIDS medicines to communities in Latin America, recognized the philanthropy of the editor extraordinaire last night with its My Hero award. “It’s a very intimate organization, yet global at the same time,” said von Furstenberg as she presented Price with the award. “And Candy is very much that. She is very compassionate, very intimate. It seems very right.” Narciso Rodriguez and Duffy, representing his business partner, Marc Jacobs (Jacobs himself could not attend, as he was shooting next season’s lookbook) turned out last night to support Price as a thank-you for all the support she has given them over the years. “She’s a very important part of Marc’s success,” said Duffy. “And a very important part of us getting our accessories business. I can’t thank her enough for what she does for young designers, charities, and this city.”

“You know, I’m a great New York girl. I was born and bred in Manhattan, so I own this town as far as I’m concerned,” said Pratts Price as she got up from dinner to join other guests for a lively round of salsa dancing. And how does she keep her signature sense of aplomb, despite all the challenges New York faces as a city, or fashion as an industry, or Aid for AIDS as a charity? “What I’m interested in seeing is how fabulously New York bounces back. We are at a party, OK? That is New York for you!”
