Fashion Criticism: No Respect!

-------

“It’s considered something that’s for and about women…I think all of those things kind of conspired to keep fashion from being given the same kind of respect.” So says Robin Givhan—famously the only fashion critic ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for her efforts—during a panel discussion this week on the place of fashion criticism. Givhan was joined by The New York Times‘ Guy Trebay and W‘s Stefano Tonchi on the panel, hosted by Fashion Projects, a magazine from Parsons professor Francesca Granata that covers the industry from a critic’s perspective. Agree or disagree? In the yea column: Trebay was careful to make the distinction that he’s an “urban ethnographer,” not a fashion critic. Hmm. In the nay column: Well, the whole thing was covered by the Columbia Journalism Review.

The famous designer first used the red sole 'by accident' when he applied red nail polish on a whim to 'energise' his heels in 1992. (10 September 2007)After a string of red carpet appearances wearing , modelling for the brand seemed like a logical next step for teen actress Hailee Steinfeld. Well, now we can all see the eagerly anticipated results, as the first campaign image has just hit the web.The leaked pictures show the 14-year-old wearing a ladylike 1940s-style, yet somehow still age-appropriate, look for the Italian label’s autumn/winter 2011 campaign. The image – shot by photographer Bruce Weber – shows Hailee wearing a conservative black swallow print top with a matching skirt, accessorised with an oversized clutch bag, chunky strappy sandals and retro shades, while standing by an American road sign. The young star, who bagged an Oscar nomination for her role in True Grit, championed the brand and sister label Prada during 2011 awards season, wearing a series of cute looks that turned her into a red carpet favourite at the tender age of 14.She follows in the fashionable footsteps of fellow actresses Kirsten Dunst, Lindsay Lohan, Katie Holmes, Vanessa Paradis and Maggie Gyllenhaal as the face of the brand. What do you think of the campaign shot? Tell us below…The celebrity ad campaigns are coming in thick and fast!Yesterday we revealed the first pics of , and now ' first campaign for Miu Miu has landed in our inboxes. The new Miu Miu muse stars in the spring/summer '09 campaign, and like Posh's Armani images, was shot be esteemed fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.Showing the actress against the backdrop of a blazing sky, she appears as as 'a luminous icon radiating a sense of mystery and theatricality,' Miu Miu explains. This is Holmes' first major advertising campaign, unlike her friend Mrs Beckham, who has starred in advertising for Marc Jacobs, Pepsi, and for her array of eponymous perfume and clothing lines.Miu Miu has a hisory of picking celebrity faces for its campaigns, with Vanessa Paradis, , and all posing for previous seasons. When Pamela Anderson signed up as the new face of Vivienne Westwood, it was pretty predictable that the shots would be somewhat different from the typical celebrity ad campaign. And so we have Pammie with her legs flailing from a laundry trolley, pushed by the Grand Dame herself in one shot, in another she poses alongside a golf buggy, flanked by Westwood and her beau Andreas Kronthaler. Of course, there's also the money shot, with Pam flaunting her considerable assets, as she poses on a windswept beach in a super low-cut top and micro-shorts. Surprisingly, the mix of Britain's most eccentric stylista and the buxom California babe somehow works, and the whimsical campaign, shot by Juergen Teller in LA, is a welcome relief from the slew of highly-stylised, highly-preened celebrity ads we've seen of late (think , Posh and Becks for Armani). The unlikely pair met when Pam attended the designer's Red Label show during September's London Fashion Week. They reportedly struck up an instant friendship, and Viv immediately tapped the Baywatch star to be the face, and body, of the spring/summer '09 campaign.A match made in fashion heaven?
