Nicholas Kirkwood Boogies Down
For his Resort ’14 collection, which he showed in Paris this week, Nicholas Kirkwood offered a dichotomous range of shoes split into “low” and “high.” First, the low: flat sandals with tiny gold studs that were created with haute urban comfort in mind (after all, most city dwellers are big walkers). Meanwhile, pointy loafers are offered in his familiar black-and-white zigzag herringbone, or white leather topped with snakeskin, among other options. Evening is where the highs come in. First, there’s the graphic and elegant “floating wave” strappy sandal that Kirkwood, a man reliably obsessed with negative space, stripped down and engineered to appear “only barely there.” Then there are the boogie-till-you-drop heels that are set with crystals and a twinkling disco ball under the arch. Also on offer were a range of high-energy color-blocked heels worked in shades of salmon, khaki, orange, or nude patent leather with lavender or teal sport mesh. Choices, choices.
