Adam Selman’s Solo
Though the collection he’s presenting tomorrow is his first, designer Adam Selman is no stranger to the spotlight. Indeed, given that Selman co-designed Rihanna’s River Island range, and took a bow with the superstar at her London Fashion Week event last year, he may have a higher profile than many an established fashion darling. Now, though, Selman is striking out on his own, launching his eponymous line with a collection equal parts slinky and sporty. “I was really inspired by those Francesco Scavullo Cosmo covers from the seventies,” Selman, who sent us an inspiration image of Margaux Hemingway on the set of a Scavullo shoot, explained at a studio visit this weekend. “But I didn’t want to do that straight up; I felt like, bringing in these athletic elements gave it a different pop, you know?” To be sure, Selman’s mash-ups of hockey jerseys and lingerie are distinctive. And both Selman and his apparel exude a refreshing sense of humor and joie de vivre. This quality will be amply displayed at the presentation tomorrow, where the models will be joined by a special, hilarious guest. And no: It’s not Rihanna.
