The Next Big Thing: Shrimps, Fall ’14
Everyone knows their Marcs from their Calvins. But as fashion month rolls on, we’ll be spotlighting the up-and-coming designers and indie brands whose names you’ll want to remember.
Label: Shrimps, designed by Hannah Weiland
Need to know: Last season, designer Hannah Weiland launched Shrimps, a line of hyper-lux faux fur coats and accessories that gets its unlikely moniker from her childhood nickname. The range took off instantly, with the likes of Sienna Miller and Laura Bailey getting snapped around town in Weiland’s Breton-striped toppers.
For her sophomore outing, which debuted during London fashion week, Weiland expanded her lineup to include candy-colored clutches, mohair biker jackets, an English school-uniform scarf, and a Popeye-inspired collar. Having studied art history and textile design at the London College of Fashion, Weiland was inspired by British cartoons and childhood memories. Shrimps’ Fall ’14 pieces are lined with a flower print by Eduardo Paolozzi, which complimented the collection’s strong Pop Art and Swinging Sixties influences.
Shrimps’ faux fur is made out of mod-acrylic material that feels, behaves, and looks like the real thing, but it is really the vibrant hues that make the label stand out. Stripes and blocks of powder blue, strawberry pink, mustard yellow, deep navy, and orange make for an eccentric, not-too-serious aesthetic that is distinctly English. One of the clutches is even named Grayson, after British Turner-prize-winning and cross-dressing ceramic artist Grayson Perry. Considering Shrimps’ popularity among the fashion set, not to mention its forthcoming Spring ’14 capsule for Net-a-Porter, its future seems even brighter than its coats.
She says: “I wouldn’t wear fur and I wouldn’t work with it, and I found this great material, so I chose to do it this way. I think it is much better for everyone.”
Where to find it: Opening Ceremony and avenue32.com. Net-a-Porter will sell an exclusive Spring capsule come March, and shrimps.co.uk is set to launch soon.
