EXCLUSIVE: Preview Narciso Rodriguez Costumes for Stephen Petronio’s New Dance-------
You only turn 30 once. Choreographer Stephen Petronio is celebrating the 30th anniversary season of his dance company this week at the Joyce Theater with a new dance, Locomotor, and two very special collaborators. Clams Casino, the hip-hop producer, has contributed an original score, and designer Narciso Rodriguez has created the costumes. Petronio and Rodriguez are longtime fans of each other, but despite their affinities, they haven’t worked together before. A chance meeting at Cindy Sherman’s Christmas party last year precipitated the new partnership. “Locomotor,” explained Petronio, “is about moving forward and backward in time to arrive at some very enlivened present.” Rodriguez approached that idea literally. “I was thinking about a collection I did in 2006 where the pieces were different colors in the front and the back,” he said. “I want you to see the dancers move, to be aware of their body, movement, and grace. I don’t want the costumes to take away from that.” Not a chance, Narciso. Here, an exclusive preview of the costumes.
