In the fall of 2007—long before backstage was a thing and the flash of a camera was as ubiquitous behind the scenes as it is on the runway—German photographer Anna Bauer received an assignment from The Daily and road-tripped her way from London to Milan to Paris, shooting models, stylists, and a host of other fashion types along the way. She used a large-format Polaroid camera and captured the industry’s central figures in spontaneous form—flagging down designers such as Raf Simons and models like Kate Moss (above) and Raquel Zimmermann (below) during quiet moments and approaching them with boldness, trepidation, and sometimes total naiveté. “When I shot David Sims, I didn’t know who he was,” she recalled at the launch of her book, Backstage, last February. The results are eye-catching—a collection of raw, oft-revealing black-and-white portraits of the people who make the shows run.
This Thursday, Bauer will show the Polaroids—many of which first debuted in Backstage—en masse for the first time at the Loewe store in Madrid. “It’s a selection of about eighty,” said Bauer of the images, which include stills of everyone from Alber Elbaz to Iris Apfel to Juergen Teller. “I’m really happy because the show is going to give them another life,” she added. The earliest Polaroids on view were taken when the project began in 2007 (a young Agyness Deyn, a sunglasses-clad Karl Lagerfeld), while the most recent, Olivier Rousteing’s, for instance (“He doesn’t know he’s in there, because I didn’t know how to get in touch with him!” exclaimed Bauer), were taken just over a year ago.
Bauer said she has thought about shooting another group of people, like musicians or athletes (“just another extreme kind of group,” she mused) in the same style. But, she reasoned, “It could never be like this. I think that’s part of the interesting thing about the project—the condensed nature of the industry. We all go to the same four fashion weeks and the amount of people is limited. It’s a very close-knit circle of people.”
Anna Bauer’s Polaroids will be on view from September 5 to November 3 at the Loewe store, located at Calle Serrano, 26, Madrid, Spain.

Last night, the fashion icon made an appearance at Claridge’s Hotel, where she helped auction off a painting by her close friend Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones. Agyness Deyn’s not ending her acting career on the stripper pole. The model-slash-actress, who plays a stripper in the upcoming remake of the 1996 cult-classic Pusher (due out this summer), has just been chosen to star in the screen adaption of the legendary Scottish novel Sunset Song. This November, Temperley London is opening its first flagship store—a six-floor Georgian space on Bruton Street, in London’s Mayfair. Lately, model Agyness Deyn has been making headlines with her provocative role as a stripper in the upcoming Danish film Pusher, but she also has another acting role up her sleeve. Deyn is the star of Waris Ahluwalia’s latest project for The Luxury Collection Hotels—a short film (which he told Style.com about a while back) entitled HERE. Deyn is part of an all-star cast Ahluwalia enlisted for the movie—Tilda Swinton conceived the short with the designer, I Am Love‘s Luca Guadagnino directed it, Heidi Bivens designed the costumes, and Jason Schwartzman created the soundtrack. The film, which follows a coast-to-coast romantic voyage between three of the Collection’s hotels, doesn’t go live (on TheLuxuryCollection.com/TheFilmHere) until January 24, but Style.com has the exclusive first look at the teaser (above).
BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund Shortlist Announced, Dita Von Teese To Appear In “Sleep No More,” Agyness Deyn’s Loft For Sale , And More…-------
This year’s shortlist of designers for the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund 2012 was announced today by the British Fashion Council. The nine designers—Jonathan Saunders, Marios Schwab, Mary Katrantzou, Meadham Kirchhoff, Nicholas Kirkwood, Peter Pilotto, Richard Nicoll, Roksanda Ilincic, and Zoe Jordan—will present their collections and future plans before a panel of judges chaired by British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman. Longtime fans of the romper-stomper English boots may prefer the classic models, but anyone looking to tweak tradition will be glad to hear that the brand now offers customization. The Dr. Martens Bespoke service launches today at London’s Dover Street Market, where customers can begin with one of two styles, the 8-hole 1460 boot and the 3-hole 1461 shoe, and select their own leathers, laces, stitches, uppers, and liners. (The finished product is delivered, complete with the signature of the craftsman who made it, in three to four weeks.) The in-store custom program remains at Dover Street Market until the end of the month, after which it travels to Beijing, Ginza, Paris, and the U.S. After that, beginning in April 2012, it’ll be open to any and all online.
