BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund Shortlist Announced

-------

Now in its fourth year, the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund announced its shortlist of nominees today. Roksanda Ilincic, Mary Katrantzou, Nicholas Kirkwood, Peter Pilotto, and Emillia Wickstead are all up for the £200,000 prize, which was won in previous years by Erdem, Christopher Kane, and Jonathan Saunders. The winner will be named on January 29 after the designers present their collections to a panel of industry professionals that includes British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, the BFC’s Caroline Rush, Lisa Armstrong, Browns’ Joan Burnstein, and more. An intimidating bunch? Sure. But with a career-boosting 200 grand on the line, we wouldn’t expect anything less.

Loree Rodkin Designs For The Cause, Vacations With Cher

-------

Loree Rodkin’s client base includes names big and bigger, but for her latest piece, the jewelry designer committed herself to giving back. She flew into London last night for the launch of “Rocks, Stones, and Metals” at Joseph, where she—along with Stephen Webster, Delfina Delettrez, Katie Hillier, and Hannah Martin—collaborated with the retailer on a curated collection sold to benefit UNICEF.

She joined a crowd that included Daphne Guinness, Alexandra Shulman, Ozwald Boateng, and Charlotte Dellal, whose mom, Andrea, was on hosting duties with Michael Roberts. The guest list might’ve wowed a lesser designer, but Rodkin is used to keeping famous company—she counts Elton John, Courtney Love, and Cher among her friends and clients. (Here in the U.S., she’s best known for designing Michelle Obama’s inauguration gems, but her first client was no slouch, either: Elizabeth Taylor.)

At the cocktail party, Rodkin (left, with Andrea Dellal) revealed that she’s been experimenting with restaurant design (with Luau in Beverly Hills), eyeglasses (“Elton’s got hundreds!”), perfumes, and candles. While in London, she tells Style.com, she’ll be “shopping at Browns, Feathers, and of course Joseph, trying to manage a facial at Harrods, and finally trying to get some rest. Last, I’m meeting my friend Cher for her London premiere of Burlesque on Monday. Then we are going on to Hawaii to switch off from all our respective traveling!” Travels with a diva? We can only imagine what bedazzled inspiration will come out of that one.

Raising Kane?

-------

…Or one of seven of his talented countrymen. British designer Christopher Kane found his line among eight shortlisted for the inaugural BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, an up-and-comer’s prize sponsored by the British Fashion Council and British Vogue. (The award is modeled on a similar initiative of its American counterpart.) In addition to Kane, Angel Jackson, Clements Ribeiro, Savile Row house E.Tautz, Erdem, Marios Schwab, Nicholas Kirkwood, and Richard Nicoll—most of whom will show at London fashion week next month—are in the running for the £200,000 award, which comes with industry mentorship (and, no small boon itself, coverage in the May 2010 issue of British Vogue, where the winner will be announced). Editor in chief Alexandra Shulman will chair the judging panel. We’re sure she’s too professional to give any inkling of her own preference, but the tea leaf readers of fashion will no doubt be scrutinizing her label choices all the same.
