Leandra Medine Really Loves Fashion Week

-------

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York kicks off this Wednesday and marks the beginning of the month of shows that will follow in London, Milan, and Paris. It’s exhilarating, but it can be a little chaotic, too, so much so that sometimes we forget just how great the four fashion weeks—not to mention those who participate in them—really are. This season, Mercedes-Benz launches its ongoing Fashion Creatives series, and its first subject, Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine, is a die-hard NYFW fan.

The day-in-the-life-style video, which debuts exclusively here, follows the blogger around her hometown of New York, pausing at all her favorite spots, like Jack’s Wife Freda, McNally Jackson bookstore, and, of course, a few boutiques.

“I really love fashion week—I’m not one to ever complain about it. I love seeing people I haven’t seen in a while, and I love seeing what other women are wearing,” Medine told Style.com. Her enthusiasm is genuine—and infectious. Since she missed Thursday, Friday, and Saturday last season due to Rosh Hashanah, Medine is looking forward to seeing Jason Wu, Altuzarra, and Peter Som. “I’m also very excited about my friend Rosie [Assoulin]‘s presentation on Monday,” Medine added. “She is such a visionary.”

In the event that New York is still plagued by the Polar Vortex come Wednesday, Medine has a foolproof sartorial formula. “For the past two weeks I’ve been wearing leggings under all of my jeans,” she told us. “Or with skirts, I’ll wear two pairs of tights and socks, then a tank top, a long-sleeved shirt and a sweater, and then a coat over that,” she continued. “But it’s usually so hot in all of the venues that I’m sure I’ll walk outside and won’t even want to wear a coat at all!”

Runway to Red Carpet: Sequins in Sydney and a Christopher Kane Double Dip

-------

Jennifer HudsonAfter several weeks of ongoing award shows, the Hollywood set conceded the spotlight to the music biz at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. The evening prior to the big event, several stars partied in style at pre-Grammy soirees. Rihanna paired a striped Spring ’14 Altuzarra blouse with a thigh-high-slit skirt at the Roc Nation pre-Grammy brunch. Miley Cyrus, meanwhile, topped a white satin slipdress with Calvin Klein Collection’s cozy pink Pre-Fall ’14 shearling coat at a pre-Grammy party in Beverly Hills.

Christopher Kane’s banded Resort ’14 frock has proven to be a very popular red-carpet choice, with Jennifer Hudson and Lara Stone joining the list of notables (including Chloë Grace Moretz and Lupita Nyong’o) who have donned versions of the look. Hudson wore the off-the-shoulder dress for Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy gala on Saturday, and Stone paired the crewneck iteration with a blazer for the Radio Times party in London on Tuesday.

Then, of course, there’s Cate Blanchett, who’s been pulling out all the sartorial stops of late. Last night at the AACTA Awards ceremony in Sydney, the actress radiated glamour in a plunging chocolate sequined Spring ’14 gown by her tried-and-true favorite, Givenchy.

Ecco Domani Toasts NYFW’s New Guard

-------

Lindsay Degen

New York fashion week is fast approaching, and things just got a little more exciting for three young designers. For the past thirteen years, Ecco Domani Wines of Italy has awarded a trio of $25,000 grants to up-and-coming New York brands that embrace “good taste” and “everyday style,” and today it announced its 2014 winners: Timo Weiland (designed by Timo Weiland, Alan Eckstein, and Donna Kang), DEGEN by Lindsay Degen (who, pictured left, designed some clever body stockings and socks for the 2013 Victoria’s Secret runway), and Novis by Jordana Warmflash. While the labels are each very distinct—Weiland is known for his romantic-meets-downtown style, DEGEN specializes in playful handmade knitwear, and Novis favors bold colors and vintage-inspired silhouettes—Ecco Domani sees each one as a key player in the future of fashion. If past recipients are any indication (Proenza Schouler, Derek Lam, Altuzarra, and Alexander Wang are just a few), these on-the-rise designers have a very bright future ahead.

Runway to Red Carpet: Stars Step It Up for Awards Season

-------

Sandra BullockWith the Golden Globes only three days away, Awards Season is officially here. And this week, we saw stars aplenty strutting down red carpets at various pre-Globe ceremonies. For instance, Golden Globe Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, nominee Amy Adams stepped out in a black-and-white polka-dot Juan Carlos Obando Spring ’14 halter gown at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards gala on Saturday, where she and her American Hustle castmates were honored with the Ensemble Performance Award. Cate Blanchett, who is up for a Best Actress Globe in the Drama category, started the season off swinging by winning the Best Actress honor at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards on Monday. The Blue Jasmine star wore a silver brocade gown with a full high-low skirt and matching jacket from Antonio Berardi’s Pre-Fall ’14 lineup to accept her accolade. On Wednesday, many A-listers, including Gravity leading lady and Golden Globe nom Sandra Bullock, headed to the People’s Choice Awards. Bullock, the night’s big winner, stepped out in a green, white, and navy floral Peter Pilotto Resort ’14 frock, and accepted awards for Favorite Movie Actress, Favorite Comedic Movie Actress, Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress, and Favorite Movie Duo alongside Gravity costar George Clooney.

On Thursday evening, W magazine held a pre-Golden Globes fete in L.A., giving the “Best Performance” nominees a chance to celebrate before the big reveal. Best Supporting Actress nom Lupita Nyong’o attended the event in a black satin-back crepe Proenza Schouler dress from the Resort ’14 collection. Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery made an appearance to celebrate her show’s nomination, turning up in a multichecked frock from Altuzarra’s fresh Pre-Fall ’14 range. With the nominees continually hitting it out of the sartorial ballpark, we can hardly wait to see what they have in store for the main event this weekend. Any predictions? Tune in Sunday night for our complete coverage of the 71st Annual Golden Globes.

On the Fringe

-------

Fringe at GucciWith the holidays in full swing, we’re in a festive spirit here at Style.com. And when it comes to party looks, we’re feeling for fringe—the stuff was all over the Spring ’14 runways. Imagine twirling on the dance floor in the white leather jacket from Altuzarra, or shimmying about in Emilio Pucci’s glam poncho. Decorative tassels added an artisanal touch at Dries Van Noten, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander Wang, while dense, carpetlike shag turned up at Proenza Schouler and 3.1 Phillip Lim. If a full-on fringy outfit is too much for you, get the look with a bohemian handbag similar to the ones we spotted at Céline, Valentino, and Gucci.

Here, a slideshow of our favorite fringed pieces.
