EXCLUSIVE: AmfAR to Honor Calvin Klein Collection, HBO, and H.R.H. Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway

-------

Italo Zucchelli, Francisco CostaWhen it comes to spring soirees, the amfAR fete is one of the hottest tickets in town. For its fifth annual Inspiration Gala celebrating men’s style, the world’s top menswear designers will create custom-made looks for a print-focused runway show at The Plaza’s Palm Court. The evening, which is scheduled for June 10, will also serve to honor a few standup groups and individuals: H.R.H. Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, HBO, and Calvin Klein Collection. Michael Lombardo will accept the award on behalf of HBO (Sarah Jessica Parker, a longtime amfAR supporter, will present the award to him), while Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli will accept on behalf of Calvin Klein Collection. The benefit, presented by MAC Viva Glam, will also include a rare performance by New Order, as well as a live auction of luxury goods. Since its inception in 2010, the Inspiration event series has raised $15 million for amfAR. Event chairs include Thom Browne, Thakoon Panichgul, James Franco, Simon Doonan, and Jennifer Lopez.

All That Glitters In Cannes Is Carine Roitfeld’s Gold Fashion Show

-------

Karolina Kurkova wears Roberto Cavalli at the Ultimate Gold Fashion Show in CannesWhen a good cause (amfAR) and a major industry figure (Carine Roitfeld) come together, it’s a given that the fashion world will line up to lend a hand. And so it was at “The Ultimate Gold Collection” fashion show that Roitfeld staged at the nonprofit’s Cinema Against AIDS Gala at the Cannes Film Festival last night. The show included golden looks from Tom Ford and Thom Browne, Versace and Valentino, Marc Jacobs and Moncler, Dior, Comme des Garçons, Prada, Ralph Lauren, and Rick Owens—a group that becomes even more impressive given that they represent less than one third of the show’s participants. Add in the twenty-two additional jewelry and accessory brands, the glossy Gianvito Rossi heels…

Suffice it to say, with LoveGold.com as one of the evening’s three title sponsors, the theme was pretty much preordained. Having soft-launched around award season earlier this year, LoveGold is being positioned as the creative, community online platform for the World Gold Council. LoveGold helped support the accessory creations, in addition to hosting the Livestream on its homepage.

“For certain designers, the cost of gold is a barrier to entry,” said Sally Morrison, LoveGold’s director of jewelry in the U.S. “We were interested in creating a sort of incubator program where we offered gold loans for jewelers we were interested in to allow them to work in the medium and de-risk it for them. That coalesced very nicely with designers [Carine] wanted to put in the show.”

Jeweler Ana Khouri has worked with gold since launching her namesake jewelry line; for her, it’s just an extension of her sculpture background. Khouri represents the new generation of precious-metal designers, one whose mandate is as much about responsible gold sourcing as unconventional multi-finger rings. “I think gold is a universal language; it really connects people. And how amazing it is to get all this talent together with gold as the link,” said Khouri, before taking her architectural cuffs to be paired with a J.W. Anderson ruffled look. Cannes’ Gold Rush

-------

Prada's look for The Ultimate Gold CollectionThe Cannes Film Festival got underway today. It’s a fabulous time for red carpet watchers; actresses play it faster and looser in the South of France than they seem to anywhere else—see our Cannes Diary for proof. But the fashion will really heat up on May 23, when amfAR is hosting its 20th anniversary Cinema Against AIDS event. The centerpiece of this year’s gala will be Carine Roitfeld’s The Ultimate Gold Collection Fashion Show, which, as its name suggests, will showcase one-of-a-kind dresses and jewels all in gold. Here, an exclusive look at three of the pieces in the show—a Prada hourglass number worthy of Liz Taylor (above), bracelets by Wright & Teague, and an Anndra Neen clutch (below)–as depicted by one of fashion’s favorite illustrators Lula Herself. LoveGold.com will host a livestream of the runway show, and Roitfeld and her CR Fashion Book team are posting daily Instagram updates on #lovegoldcannes. Continue Reading “Cannes’ Gold Rush” »

Borgo Goes For Gold

-------

Eddie Borgo's Gold CuffEddie Borgo’s forte may be urban baubles with a bite, but having primarily worked with crystals and silver-, gunmetal-, and gold-plated metal since launching his eponymous range in 2008, it would seem the designer is embracing the even finer things in life—when it comes to materials, anyway. Tapped by Love Gold to create some one-of-a-kind pieces, Borgo has made his first foray into precious metals with a set of 18K gold cuffs. The wares are a decadent fusion of Borgo’s best-selling bracelets, including his cone bangles. Naturally, the designer’s got big plans for his new baubles’ debut—amfAR will be featuring the pieces in the Ultimate Gold Collection fashion show during its event in Cannes next week.

amfAR Takes the Battle to Tribeca

-------

HBO’s forthcoming documentary The Battle of amfAR won’t air until December, but its debut screening at the Tribeca Film Festival last night certainly managed to draw a crowd, with Uma Thurman, Harry Belafonte, and Fern Mallis all coming out in support. Mallis—a founding board member of Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS—told Style.com that she remembered giving amfAR one of DIFFA’s first grants, back in the eighties, to buy a refrigerator. These days, amfAR can afford its own iceboxes. It’s also evolved into one of the world’s leading funders of AIDS research, and the charity’s work and donations have made many new therapies available. And, of course, it’s amassed an impressive roster of celebrity endorsers—heck, Sarah Jessica Parker chaired its New York City gala in February.

But one mustn’t forget amfAR’s first famous patron, Dame Elizabeth Taylor. The Battle of amfAR chronicles Taylor’s work with clinician Dr. Mathilde Krim in mobilizing during the early days of HIV. In the film’s opening moments, Taylor addresses a congressional committee on the burgeoning AIDS crisis. In a voice-over, the late actress explains that she watched as, one by one, her friends grew ill. “And so I thought, Bitch, do something!”

After the film, Kenneth Cole moderated a Q&A with Krim and amfAR CEO Kevin Frost. Krim, now 86, received a standing ovation as she took the stage. Cole asked if she has ever felt hopeless in what seems to be a never-ending battle. Said Krim: “No. I’ve never felt like throwing in the towel. From the very beginning, my feelings, my anxieties, my hope are the same as they are today. Is that a good answer?”
