Need to know: At just four years old, Anna Laub’s London-based PRISM has already gained serious traction in the beachwear biz. Formerly a journalist, the designer launched her label when she was unable to find eyeglasses that she liked and decided to make her own. Fast-forward to Spring ’14—presented this past weekend atop New York’s Standard Hotel—and PRISM has on offer a full slew of sunnies, swimsuits, shoes (patent espadrilles), and see-through purses. Those came in envelope pochette form, with black leather contours and a graphic triangular closure. As for her maillots, Laub drew from a daguerreotype she found in Japan from the 1880s (she translated it into a crinkly, antiqued effect on a malachite one-piece) and the Big Smoke’s flowering lilacs—the purple color of which she displayed on a quadrant of models, standing like chic little water sentries above Le Bain’s infamous hot tub.
She says: As for her hue of choice, Laub said, “The lilac was inspired by when it’s gray in London—it’s the only color you can still see.”

The weather in Paris this Saturday night was not exactly tropical. But over in Montmartre, Prism London impresario Anna Laub generated a bit of a heatwave. To celebrate the launch of Prism’s new range of bags, Laub decided to throw a house party, replete with tacos on demand, beaucoup des cocktails, an Instagram photo booth, an attic dance party, and, for some reason, a bowler hat suspended from the ceiling near the bar. Tacos in Paris is a surreal enough concept; was this an offhand tribute to Magritte? “Oh god, the bowler hat…,” said Laub, who co-hosted the fete with Garage magazinesters Chloe Kerman and Shala Monroque. “Don’t even get me involved with the bowler hat. I have no idea. It was pretty much improvised party lighting.” It was also a stroke of genius, given that the party’s un-stated theme was, essentially, the randomness of modern jet-set life. “You know, the bags are designed to make travel more functional,” Laub noted, “and I was thinking about the fact that we’re all traveling so much these days, and it’s kind of a crazy thing, that people have friends all over the world, and these lives where they’re in Tokyo one day and then Paris the next.” Yes, it’s all a bit of a glam mishmash. Very tacos in Paris, you might say.

Need to know: Apparently, New York City was hit by a tornado on Saturday. But you wouldn’t have known it at Anna Laub’s Prism presentation. Rain in the morning, yes, but come afternoon, there were clear blue skies as far as the eye could see, which was pretty far given that the presentation took place on the roof deck of the Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking. “My friends all take the piss out of me, because I live in this fantasy world where it’s sunny all the time,” said Laub, whose swim-and-sunglasses brand is based out of tropical London. “But I do feel like that fantasy came true for me today.” Laub appears to have spent much of the biblically miserable English summer of 2012 elaborating on her sunshine fantasies: Along with launching a capsule collection of leather espadrilles, Laub has evolved the Prism swimwear styles to better suit the demands of beach or poolside living.
She says: “I was really starting to think of the swimwear as apparel,” Laub explained. “Like, you’d be in your bikini, and you just pull on a skirt to head to lunch. There are places where people really do live that way.”

It hasn’t been particularly summery in London this week—yesterday evening, for instance, saw the city drenched in yet another cold, temperamental squall. Not the most auspicious weather, perhaps, for the launch of eyewear and swimwear label Prism London’s two-month-long pop-up shop on the fourth floor of Harvey Nichols. Or, as Prism’s Anna Laub pointed out, perhaps the weather was auspicious. After all, there’s nothing like dingy April showers to make the mind flee to the poolside or the beach—a flight of fancy given a big assist by Prism’s swimwear and sunglasses mix. “I’ve been wanting to find a way to present the suits and the glasses together,” Laub explained, when asked about the raw wood installation created by set designer Robert Storey and Architecture at Large honcho Rafael de Cárdenas. “We were in here until 1 a.m. last night, hammering,” Storey recalled. “It was kind of surreal, being in here on our own.” “It was a real Mannequin moment,” Laub added. “I wanted to run around and try everything on. But I didn’t.” As always, a girl can dream.
Prism’s Anna Laub is extending her reach. The English editor and designer, known for her hand-crafted glasses and sunglasses (and enviable personal style), tiptoed into swimwear this season and is now going a step further—literally. After working with Opening Ceremony on an espadrille to be sold at the retailer’s Fashion’s Night Out event, Laub decided she liked the style so much, she planned to keep it. At least until stock runs out, that is. The two-tone leather slip on, made in Spain by traditional purveyors, are now available in the just-launched Limited Edition section of her online store at PrismLondon.com. It’s the first of several small-batch offerings she’ll be selling on her site. Limited-edition sunglasses in exclusive colors and with exclusive embellishments will be next, followed by a collaboration with what she’ll only describe as a “notable jewelry designer.” In the meantime, her espadrilles (about $227, in men’s and women’s sizes) are available now until they’re all sold.
