Eye on the Prize
There are only 12, and fittingly, they launched on 12/12/12. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s latest project, a dozen crocodile The Row backpacks decorated by Damien Hirst, had the Internet roaring even before they were released last night at Paola Russo’s new Hollywood concept shop Just One Eye. The preliminary buzz was, in part, caused by the big names involved. But really, the chatter revolved around the sacs’ alleged $55,000 price tags. “Damien [Hirst] uses the most iconic pieces and he used our iconic backpack,” said Mary-Kate Olsen, noting that she and Ashley gave Hirst full reign in the design process. “We just supplied a canvas for him and he did what he does best,” Ashley added.
The likes of Erin Wasson, Stavros Niarchos, and Co’s Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern turned out to the boutique to celebrate the launch. And the store proved to be a fitting backdrop for the occasion. “The Row was the first one to follow Just One Eye,” Russo said. Ashley Olsen offered, “I love the concept behind the store. The whole experience is very personal.” Though talk of the backpacks’ price was off the table, the suggested retail value didn’t deter potential patrons of the arts—an eager buyer gingerly toted her new pack around the party.
All In The Row

Style.com’s executive editor, Nicole Phelps, called out Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s “beautifully understated” Fall ’12 collection for The Row as one of her highlights of the season in our editor scrapbook. The CFDA members are decidedly on the same page—the sister act earned a Womenswear Designer of the Year award nod, alongside seasoned veterans like Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, on Wednesday night. Here, watch a Style.com exclusive video (below) showcasing the luxe, monochrome looks the Olsens presented at the historic Bemelmans Bar in February.
Lacroix’s Ballet Costumes Get Their Own Exhibition, Mary Katrantzou’s Typewriter Dress, And More…
Christian Lacroix is the latest designer to be honored with a museum exhibit. His Swarovski-decorated designs for La Source, a 2011 production of a nineteenth-century ballet, will be showcased at the National Costume Museum in Moulins, France. [WWD]
Mary Katrantzou is known for her hyper-realistic digital prints, but a typewriter collector in Switzerland thought one of the designer’s Fall 2012 dresses (pictured) was a bit too literal in inspiration. Adwoa Bagalini, who runs the blog Retro Tech Geneva, wrote Katrantzou a friendly letter pointing out the similarities to her typewriter photo. The designer admitted the correlation and sent Bagalini her own typewriter dress. [Racked]

The latest industry rumor isn’t about a Dior appointment—but rather, the house’s former designer John Galliano. Hint reports that Galliano may be heading to Schiaparelli. With the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibit Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion, it would be a timely comeback for the Italian house. [Hint]
On Our Radar: The Row Driving Gloves

“Entry-level” is not a phrase you often hear where The Row is concerned. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have kept the quality high and the prices higher on all of the pieces at their label, a strategy that’s endeared them to luxe obsessives and craftwork wonks, even while it’s earned them a detractor or two. (Their $39,000 backpack—make that sold-out $39,000 backpack—famously made the rounds as a punchline on the cable pundit circuit.) But their new driving gloves, available online today at TheRow.com, are a more affordable indulgence than fans may expect. They’ll still set you back $325, but the hair-calf and leather or python and leather drivers have all the understated chic the line stands for at a relatively mild rate. They are, dare one say it, a Row stocking stuffer. Even if your particular stocking doesn’t hang on Mustique.
