“Entry-level” is not a phrase you often hear where The Row is concerned. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have kept the quality high and the prices higher on all of the pieces at their label, a strategy that’s endeared them to luxe obsessives and craftwork wonks, even while it’s earned them a detractor or two. (Their $39,000 backpack—make that sold-out $39,000 backpack—famously made the rounds as a punchline on the cable pundit circuit.) But their new driving gloves, available online today at TheRow.com, are a more affordable indulgence than fans may expect. They’ll still set you back $325, but the hair-calf and leather or python and leather drivers have all the understated chic the line stands for at a relatively mild rate. They are, dare one say it, a Row stocking stuffer. Even if your particular stocking doesn’t hang on Mustique.
At tonight’s Fashion for Action benefit for Housing Works, the New York-based charity that runs secondhand shops to raise money to advocate for the homeless and those living with HIV/AIDS, there’ll be plenty of fashion on offer—more than $1 million worth of donated clothing and beauty products from labels like Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, and Michael Kors. But as Housing Works’ shops are known to be some of the city’s best stores for thrifting your apartment a great new decor piece, too, the nonprofit also commissioned a few one-of-a-kind home goods. Designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of Elizabeth and James, Doo-Ri Chung of Doo.Ri, and jeweler Kenneth Jay Lane are among those who’ve decked out vases in Swarovski Elements crystals. The vases, on auction from December 6 to 20 at Shophousingworks.com, will be on display at tonight’s event; Style.com has the exclusive first look.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have expanded their growing fashion empire yet again. Last week, the dynamic duo showed off its finesse for luxe clothing with its Spring ’12 The Row collection, and today, the designers announced they are stepping into new, more comfortable shoes as the creative directors for Italian sneaker brand Superga, now licensed by the Olsens’ longtime collaborator Steve Madden. The designers are promising a return to Superga’s luxe roots, starting with The Row for Superga for Spring 2012.
