going another round at the carousel of hope ball

Saturday evening’s Carousel of Hope fundraiser, organized by the Children’s Diabetes Foundation in Beverly Hills, attracted its fair share of Hollywood heavyweights, among them Quincy Jones, George Hamilton, Sidney Poitier, Raquel Welch, and Denzel Washington. Still, none quite stole the limelight as much as hostess-with-the-mostest Barbara Davis, who co-founded the Foundation in 1977 following the diagnosis of her daughter’s diabetic condition. Over $75 million later, Davis’ quest to combat the disease includes the biannual sell-out sit-down dinner, during which the philanthropist extraordinaire opens an evening of entertainment from select guests (this year, the Jonas Brothers headlined) dressed in a signature pink ball gown. Adding to this fairy-tale moment of fashion fancy (at 80 years of age, mind you), the grand dame of fundraising accessorized with a miniaudière Carousel clutch by Judith Leiber. Also paying heed to accessories was co-host Jay Leno, who channeled an Edie Beale moment by joking to the crowd, “I realize there are a few wealthy people in this room tonight, but in light of the economic crisis let us not forget, people—we can always use the napkin as a scarf.”
