Antipodium is a London-based label with Australian roots. Its name, according to creative director Geoffrey J. Finch (an Aussie, East London transplant himself), is “a play on Antipodean, and a nod to the democratic nature of style in our homeland. As the label has developed, the name continues to reflect our laid- back approach to fashion.”
Fittingly, Antipodium’s East London base is ground zero for the type of person for whom Finch designs: young and hip yet professional—the working girl who loves (and pays) for her party life. In the few years since the brand launched, Antipodium has become a firm favorite of cool purveyors like Alexa Chung, Beth Ditto, Edie Campbell, Dree Hemingway, and Carey Mulligan, among others, and is stocked by international powerhouses such as Barneys, Liberty, Opening Ceremony, Isetan, and many more.
The Spring ’14 collection, which is previewed here exclusively ahead of this Saturday’s runway show, is entitled Attention Shoppers. It is a tribute to Finch being a “shopgirl at heart. It’s a mash-up of Are You Being Served?, Cher from Clueless, Miss Piggy, Romy and Michele, Pretty Woman, and Barbie—essentially the glory of retail,” says the designer. The good news is that his hodgepodge of references works. A blush pink, iridescent knife-pleat skirt with a Tropicana-patterned bowling shirt takes the girl from the office cubicle to cocktails. Ditto a houndstooth jacket and a roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-to-work white dress. “With SS14, we’re pitching to move to the next level,” offered Finch. “These are exciting times.”
Beth Ditto simultaneously did it up, and down, at her recent Maui wedding to Kristin Ogata. Up because she wore a custom, Madonna-worthy Jean Paul Gaultier gown (The Gossip frontwoman also modeled on the designer’s Spring ’11 catwalk), and down because she chose to go laid-back and barefoot during the nuptials. Ogata, however, wore a sweet pair of perforated white lace-ups with her spiffy white suit, and both accented their wedding ensembles with floral garlands and ear-to-ear grins. Congrats to the happy couple!
It’s been five years since Katie Grand put a naked Beth Ditto on the first cover of Love magazine. “I had a lot to prove,” said the editor in chief of her early days at the publication. Now, after a slew of infamous stars (Kate Moss, Lea T, and Justin Bieber among them), Grand has selected a less likely face for her tenth issue—Minnie Mouse. “I wanted to do something that was sweet and charming, and Minnie was quite easy to understand,” she explained. Dubbed the Sweetie Issue, the Fall ’13 edition also features Mert & Marcus-lensed covers with Edie Campbell, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Chiharu Okunugi, and Cara Delevingne—each of whom don custom mouse ears by Gucci, Loewe, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, or Jake and Dinos Chapman for Louis Vuitton. Inside, Miuccia Prada makes her modeling debut, Tim Walker snaps a lion, Mert & Marcus pose for a smooch with everyone’s favorite rodent (below), and Marc Jacobs interviews Jessica Lange. Just before running into Jacobs’ Paris studio, Grand called Style.com to talk kitsch, her demanding persona, and Delevingne’s shoot, which the model did on no sleep and sans makeup.
You’ve had everyone from Beth Ditto to Kate Moss to Lea T on your cover. Which has been most significant for you?
From the minute I started talking to Condé Nast about working together, I knew that I wanted Beth on our first cover. I just didn’t really care about what anyone said. When Beth, who had never met Mert & Marcus, arrived at the Chateau Marmont, where we were photographing, she ran in completely naked and said, “I’m here!” And I was like, “Yeah, good for you. You are everything that I want you to be.” She was perfect for that project.
Cara Delevingne, who has become sort of a Love fixture, is on one of the Fall ’13 covers. What draws you to Cara, and what makes her such a sensation at the moment?
I think she is a really nice, very sweet girl. She will travel across the Atlantic to do anything for me. I love that for this shoot, she actually hadn’t been to bed. It was the day after her DKNY party, so I was a little nervous about having booked her. I just thought, Oh, my God, this poor thing, she’s got to have this massive party, and then she has to come to work for the cover. Usually you don’t see Cara for the first couple hours of a shoot because she has very cleverly hidden herself under a table to sleep somewhere. But this time, we managed to get her hair done, and then we immediately pulled her in front of the camera without makeup. That music and fashion are locked in an endless embrace is not news. Fashion week wouldn’t be fashion week without a spate of performances, and every season brings with it a few musicians who seem to clear their schedules for a solid month to do the rounds. (Beth Ditto, lately of the Versus runway performance, has graduated to mainstay status; ditto Florence Welch, who belted from a giant clam a year ago at Chanel.) But where record sales are concerned, sex sells, even for fashion’s most dedicated fans. There are enough naked album covers to fill a side gallery of your local museum, from the famous (John and Yoko’s Two Virgins, 1968) to the infamous (Jane’s Addiction’s Nothing’s Shocking, 1988) to the new-establishment (the original cover for the Strokes’ 2001 debut, Is This It—but of course, that’s the one you have, right?). Now the moment seems to have returned. A pair of dueling popettes have just released clothes-free preview art for their new albums: Rihanna’s Unapologetic on one hand; Christina Aguilera’s Lotus on the other. They’ve set the celebrity blogosphere a-thrumming. The fashion one, not so much. But today sees the release of yet another less-is-more cover for an album likelier to be spinning in studios and shops around town: Bat for Lashes’ The Haunted Man (left). Three’s a trend (again).
Up-and-coming designer Damir Doma had a strong showing on the Paris runway yesterday—what Style.com’s Nicole Phelps called his “click moment.” Paired with those smartly tailored pantsuits and sleeveless shifts were these über-cool circular frames, made in collaboration with eyewear brand Mykita (the label has just come off a collab with musician Beth Ditto). “This particular shape perfectly rounds up the Damir Doma look,” the designer says of the sunglasses made from gold, platinum, graphite, and horn (which explains the price tag—they start at $1,700 and they’re available on Mkyita.com in February). “From the very beginning, our aim was to translate the traditional shape into something modern and create an iconic object.” Here, Style.com has the up-close look at the shades.
