Runway to Red Carpet: Gucci Girls and Sparkles Galore

-------

Beyonce and Blake LivelyThis week, it was Gucci, rather than film premieres, that drew the stars out in New York. Creative director Frida Giannini made a rare trip to the Big Apple to host a duo of parties, which were attended by Gucci-clad celebs including Beyoncé, Blake Lively, and Kate Mara.

On Tuesday, Giannini and co. feted Chime for Change, a charity founded by Giannini, Beyoncé, and Salma Hayek Pinault. Blake Lively showed her support in a mod mustard Fall ’14 Gucci frock with a leather-lined keyhole cutout down the front. Not to be outdone, Queen Bey looked flawless in a one-of-a-kind plunging white Gucci jumpsuit. The following evening, Kate Mara joined the fashion crowd in celebrating Gucci’s long-anticipated cosmetics launch. She chose a burgundy A-line number with a leather bodice from the Fall ’14 runway for the affair.

In London on Tuesday, stars turned out for Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards. After making a splash on the red carpet, Naomi Campbell, Taylor Schilling, and Sarah Hyland snagged trophies. Schilling, who took home the Editor’s Special Award, and Hyland, who earned the Comedy Actress accolade, both opted for shimmery looks. Schilling went for Peter Pilotto’s plunging silver-sequined Fall ’14 dress, while Hyland opted for a sparkling Gucci Resort ’14 shift. Campbell, the TV Personality Award winner, was the most memorable in a red-and-black Alexander McQueen Spring ’14 feathered dress.

Here, more of this week’s red-carpet highlights.

Virgil Abloh’s Off-White Gets the Jay and Bey Seal of Approval

-------

Beyonce and Jay Z

Today in Jay Z and Beyoncé news, the power pair has released a trailer for their upcoming On The Run Tour, which kicks off on June 29. The nearly four minute video clip feels more movie trailer than promo short, and sees the couple unleash their inner Bonnie & Clyde—flashback to 2003—and wreak havoc. The clip boasts an impressive lineup of star-studded appearances (from Blake Lively, Sean Penn, and Jake Gyllenhaal, just to name a few), but we couldn’t take our eyes off Virgil Abloh’s signature Off-White camo jacket, which Jay Z is seen wearing at the 1:05 and 1:33 marks. It was only five months ago that the Chicago-born designer (who also happens to be Kanye West’s creative director) launched his Off-White streetwear label. As if his recent foray into womenswear and weekly contributions to Style Map weren’t enough to stir up buzz, a nod from music’s royal couple will undoubtedly put Abloh on quite a few radars.

Runway to Red Carpet: Forever Floral

-------

Emmy Rossum , Zhang Ziyi, and Mindy Kaling

This week, celebs hit the red carpet in a veritable bouquet of floral off-the-runway wares. As we were merrymaking Stateside, Zhang Ziyi arrived at Le Grand Bal de la Comédie-Française in Paris on July 4 wearing some brand-new Giambattista Valli Fall ’13 Couture. The gown—mermaid-finned and pontifically white, thanks to the designer’s porcelain-inspired theme—boasted dainty forget-me-nots cascading downward. Also on Independence Day, Mindy Kaling went to Guy Oseary’s Fourth of July party in Los Angeles wearing a floral-blocked take on a Marc Jacobs Resort ’13 dress.

On Tuesday in New York, Blake Lively headed to the premiere of hubby Ryan Reynolds’ new film,Turbo, donning a crystal-covered skirt from Burberry Prorsum Resort ’14. While not technically flora, the embellishments’ effect was one of dense, twinkling petals. The same day in L.A., Diane Kruger arrived at Jimmy Kimmel Live! sporting Emanuel Ungaro Resort ’14. The Fausto Puglisi-designed outfit featured little white daisies on a pastel-banded, black silk skirt.

On Wednesday, Emmy Rossum wore a Carolina Herrera Resort ’14 number with aplomb to Persol’s “Magnificent Obsessions: 30 Stories of Craftsmanship in Film” opening in Queens. The skirt’s big cobalt petals were accented by a skinny vermillion-bowed band across the waist, which the Shameless star further highlighted with a scarlet CH Carolina Herrera clutch.

Hick Flick

-------

A brief glance at the trailer and one might think Hick is just your average chick flick—a tale of two girls from the midwest on a road trip to Vegas. And according to the film’s star, Chloë Moretz, it felt like one, too. “We stayed up all night cooking, until like 4 a.m. making cupcakes from scratch—it was amazing. I thought, ‘Oh, I’m just making dessert with Blake Lively, no big deal,’ ” she said last night of her co-star (who wasn’t in attendance) at the film’s New York premiere, hosted by the Cinema Society. “She got pretty crazy, she was making like baked Camembert and bananas foster.”

Off-screen, Hick might have been a sweet encounter for the cast (which also included Alec Baldwin, Juliette Lewis, and Burberry ad model Eddie Redmayne) and crew thanks to Moretz and Lively, but the film itself is a real gun-slinging, gritty affair. Before the lights went down in the theater at the Crosby Street Hotel, the film’s director, Derick Martini, warned the audience (which included the likes of Emma Roberts and Kieran Culkin). “It’s tough, it’s not Mary Poppins,” he said of his screen adaptation of Andrea Portes’ novel. “I just want you to be prepared.”

So how did Moretz, in her Dolce & Gabbana dress and Jimmy Choo heels last night, transform herself into Luli, the Nebraska teenager who sets out on her own after her parents abandon her? She admitted it was certainly not personal experience she drew upon. “I have pretty normal parents and stuff like that,” the 15-year-old said. “But I really felt for Luli. She is opened up to this adult world and things that she had never encountered that is really scary, but that’s just life, you know?” Spoken like a seasoned vet.

The Cat Is Out of the Bag

-------

If the elbow-to-elbow lines at the Jason Wu for Target party was any indication, the retailer’s latest high-low collaboration, set to hit shelves on February 5, will be tough to keep in stock. Wu and Target took over Skylight Soho last night and converted it into a whimsical Parisian street scene with a Ladurée macaron station, fully stocked café bar, circulating mini croque madames, and, of course, a boutique stocking the affordable designs (think: polka blouses with jaunty ties and pleated skirts for strolling the Seine). While the likes of Blake Lively, Chloë Moretz, and Harley Viera-Newton jostled for the size smalls, Wu circulated in a trim black-on-black suit. “It’s been amazing to come up with a concept and to have it executed like this,” he said, marveling at the sheer scale of the party and collaboration. “I’ve really enjoyed the process,” he added. “I mean, I’ve now filmed my first commercial and there’s the billboards!”

And the cheeky black cat in the campaign? “I’m a cat person; I have two at home,” Wu explained. ”And I like that the black cat is mysterious and a bit naughty.” Nearby, Kate Young stopped to congratulate the young designer, as did Jaime King, who was in town from L.A. for a few days. By 10:30 p.m. the crowd thickened around the stage, where French electropop band Yelle played a set. Judging by the number of editors in the room bopping their heads, with their Wu merchandise in one hand and a cocktail in the other, it felt like a fashion week warm-up.
