Swedish parfumeur Ben Gorham of Byredo is no stranger to homages in scent. He recently debuted Mister Marvelous, a cologne inspired by the life and work of Christiaan Houtenbos, the seventies hair god who coiffed the likes of Grace Jones as he circled the globe. But my favorite of his paeans is to the late, great Warhol Superstar Candy Darling. A mini-Darling revival was kicked off a few years back when Antony Hegarty put Peter Hujar’s portrait of Darling in her last hospital bed on the cover of Antony and the Johnsons’ beloved album I Am a Bird Now. (And while we’re on the topic of Hujar, if you’re in New York, run, don’t walk, to the Hujar show at Matthew Marks, closing this weekend!) Darling’s reign continued last year, when documentarian James Rasin released Beautiful Darling, a look at the life of the muse and occasional actress (born James Slattery in Long Island in 1944), with Chloë Sevigny providing the voice of the late Superstar. It’ll be out on DVD soon, the filmmakers promise. Until then, there’s Byredo’s Candy Darling candle, redolent of coriander, rosewood, patchouli, and musk. A fitting tribute—not to mention the beginnings of a pretty good séance.
