Runway to Red Carpet: Forever Floral

-------

Emmy Rossum , Zhang Ziyi, and Mindy Kaling

This week, celebs hit the red carpet in a veritable bouquet of floral off-the-runway wares. As we were merrymaking Stateside, Zhang Ziyi arrived at Le Grand Bal de la Comédie-Française in Paris on July 4 wearing some brand-new Giambattista Valli Fall ’13 Couture. The gown—mermaid-finned and pontifically white, thanks to the designer’s porcelain-inspired theme—boasted dainty forget-me-nots cascading downward. Also on Independence Day, Mindy Kaling went to Guy Oseary’s Fourth of July party in Los Angeles wearing a floral-blocked take on a Marc Jacobs Resort ’13 dress.

On Tuesday in New York, Blake Lively headed to the premiere of hubby Ryan Reynolds’ new film,Turbo, donning a crystal-covered skirt from Burberry Prorsum Resort ’14. While not technically flora, the embellishments’ effect was one of dense, twinkling petals. The same day in L.A., Diane Kruger arrived at Jimmy Kimmel Live! sporting Emanuel Ungaro Resort ’14. The Fausto Puglisi-designed outfit featured little white daisies on a pastel-banded, black silk skirt.

On Wednesday, Emmy Rossum wore a Carolina Herrera Resort ’14 number with aplomb to Persol’s “Magnificent Obsessions: 30 Stories of Craftsmanship in Film” opening in Queens. The skirt’s big cobalt petals were accented by a skinny vermillion-bowed band across the waist, which the Shameless star further highlighted with a scarlet CH Carolina Herrera clutch.

Runway to Red Carpet: Queens of Contrast

-------

Kristen Wiig in Prabal Gurung, Michelle Obama in Carolina Herrera, and Milla Jovovich in Saint Laurent

Over the course of a particularly international week for flashbulb fashion, megawatt personalities turned up the world over in sophisticated, high-contrast (and high-impact) ensembles, each of which stood out against carpets red and step-and-repeats a-branded.

On Sunday, Taylor Swift arrived at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Los Angeles wearing an Hervé Léger by Max Azria Pre-Fall ’13—you guessed it—bandage dress. The peppy songstress accented her cage-like ribbing with a pair of strappy Christian Louboutin sandals.

Things picked up on Tuesday in Paris, where Milla Jovovich sported a Saint Laurent Spring ’13 pewter-sequined column dress and dramatic black chiffon cape (naturally, she looked lovely, but we kind of wish she had topped it all off with the flat-brim Hedi Slimane showed on the catwalk). What occasion could warrant such a theatrical outfit, you might wonder? It was for the Liaisons au Louvre III charity dinner—yes, the same dinner where Diana Ross took the stage. The chanteuse, however, opted for a fittingly fiery red gown. Jetting far east to Beijing, Zhang Ziyi attended the unveiling of Chanel’s “Little Black Jacket” exhibition wearing a simple blouse-and-bloomer combo from the house’s Scottish Pre-Fall ’13 collection. And looping back to the City of Light, funny gal Kristen Wiig attended the opening of her latest flick, Imogene, wrapped in a graphic, artfully draped Prabal Gurung dress—a twist on the techniques used in the designer’s cut-and-curved Fall ’13 military spectacular.

Lastly, Wednesday saw the industry’s highest-profile champion—Michelle Obama—hot-footing in a Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall ’13 number at a dinner in Berlin in honor of her husband. Noirish navy and silvery white whorls complemented the dress’ nipped waist, tulip flare, and ladylike shoulder-bows—FLOTUS appeared as turned out as ever.

Designers Get Behind The Lens For Project Paz

-------

Since its inception three years ago, Project Paz’s annual Project Art charity event has roped in a strong legion of designers to contribute to its cause. This year is no different—the likes of Tory Burch, Joseph Altuzarra, Narciso Rodriguez, Proenza Schouler, Michael Bastian, Rag & Bone, and Carolina Herrera have all shot one-of-a-kind photos to be auctioned at the gala in New York next month, with the proceeds going to help raise money for children who are victims of violence in Juarez, Mexico. The only guideline given to the designers for the image: Take a picture that reflects what you think of Mexico. Here, Style.com has an exclusive first look at some of the shots by Rodriguez (pictured, below), Prabal Gurung (pictured, left), and Derek Lam (pictured, below). “I love carnation flowers,” Lam tells Style.com, in reference to his piece. “They are ornate, over-the-top beautiful, optimistic flowers. They are full of life, like Mexico and her people.”

Tickets to the November 5 Project Paz benefit can be purchased at ProjectPaz.org .

The Supermodel Games, And More Of Today’s Top Stories

-------

The 2012 Olympic Games are gearing up to be quite the fashionable affair. More reports have surfaced that the likes of supermodels Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Lily Cole, Stella Tennant, and Georgia May Jagger are expected to strut their stuff at the closing ceremony in clothes by Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and Vivienne Westwood. The Englishwomen are doing it for love of country rather than financial reward—they’ll receive only 1 pound sterling each for their participation. [Telegraph]

In other supermodel news, Miranda Kerr divulged some of her secrets to Vogue U.K. The Victoria’s Secret stunner says she wanted to be a gymnast when she was younger, but that she was too tall and that modeling was never part of her life plan. Kerr also addressed the rumors of her talent for singing. “I love singing for my own benefit,” she said. “But will there be an album one day? Who knows? It’s not on my schedule right now.” [Vogue U.K.]

Congratulations are in order for Carolina Herrera. The designer will be the recipient of the Superstar Award at Fashion Group International’s Night of Stars gala this coming fall. Herrera joins the ranks of fellow designers Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld, Oscar de la Renta, and Nicolas Ghesquière. The annual event will take place on October 25 with a Dreamcatchers theme. [WWD]

How many different variations of a Louis Vuitton handbag can you make? 80,000, apparently. The French house is launching a new service starting July 30, where customers can create their own bespoke handbags at the Haute Maroquinerie, a private salon in Vuitton’s Bond Street store. [Vogue U.K.]

Last week, George Michael tweeted the news that Kate Moss would be the star of his new music video and now you can get a sneak peek at the supermodel’s performance. Unlike the barely-there bikini getup that she wore for the White Stripes, Moss dons a modest, oversized shaggy coat. Catch the full video tomorrow. [Telegraph]
