Tim Coppens, Liya Kebede, and More Join the CFDA

cfda-sizedEvery spring, the Council of Fashion Designers of America admits a new crop of designer members. They apply to the program like any other job: résumé, portfolio, and letters of recommendation. This year, 30 new members have been chosen, including Jonathan Simkhai, Lemlem’s Liya Kebede, Tim Coppens, Veronica Beard’s Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard, and Edun’s Danielle Sherman. The membership total is now 478.

“These designers are not just uniquely talented, but they also represent, through their businesses, an important contribution to American economy and job creation,” said Steven Kolb, CEO of the CFDA, in a statement. In addition to hosting the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York each year, the CFDA offers programs that support professional development and scholarships in fashion design, like the CFDA Fashion Incubator and the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, among several others.

In other CFDA news, the board voted for CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg to extend her stay through 2016. Von Furstenberg has been president since 2006. “The board’s unanimous decision to ask Diane to stay on as president is a testament to the great growth the CFDA has had under her leadership,” Kolb said. “An additional two years will make it a decade of Diane with the time spent on strengthening the board and organizational development.”

Reece Hudson’s Virtual Expansion

Reece Hudson, the New York-based handbag and accessories label founded by Reece Solomon and her business partner, Max Stein, in 2009, is on a roll. The brand has experienced some serious success since it earned a coveted spot in the CFDA’s Fashion Incubator program in 2011. Evidence? Spring 2013 saw the range launch in major retailers like Barneys New York and Shopbop.com. In an effort to meet bigger orders and up its leather quality, the brand has, for the past two seasons, been manufacturing its clever clutches, totes, and satchels in Italy. And the duo has even begun to conquer key international markets—come Fall ’13, it will land in China and Russia. Today, Solomon and Stein (who are actually just back from a CFDA/W Hotels-sponsored inspiration trip in Istanbul), announced the debut of Reece Hudson’s new Web site, which marks the brand’s first foray into e-commerce. “We only do two collections per year, so stores are selling out of things in thirty or forty-five days, and then there’s nothing available,” said Stein, explaining that he and Solomon hope the e-commerce portion of their Web site (which will be accessible to clients worldwide) will help fill the ’tween-season gap. The new online destination will also offer special pieces that aren’t often available at larger retailers.

In addition to e-shopping, Reece Hudson’s virtual home features fashion films, behind-the-scenes snaps, a full collections archive, and more. “One thing we’ve been working on a lot with our mentors since being in the Incubator is building a defined brand image,” said Solomon. The Web site, which the designer describes as “simple and clean,” is the pair’s next step in expanding and defining the growing label. Check out the brand’s new online digs at reecehudson.com.

Weather Appropriate

After weeks of unseasonably mild weather, the temperatures have dropped in New York in the past few days. And although designer Luis Fernandez is a Miami native, he was on the same page. For his Fall ’12 menswear collection, the Number:Lab designer and CFDA Fashion Incubator (class of 2014) participant was inspired by ice climbing, glacial hiking, and Buckminster Fuller’s “ephemeralization” theory—essentially, doing more with less. The latter academic nod seems to come with the territory; Fernandez is a former architect and likes the clean aesthetics of Martin Margiela, Dries van Noten, and Tomas Maier. But it wasn’t quite the clinical iciness of, say, nineties minimalism. For one, he played with color and texture. The opening number (pictured), an overcoat and trouser ensemble, was cleanly rendered but in a ripe, rich red. Pants were a highlight, and one sharply tailored pair was spliced with gray charcoal in front and navy in back. Another tweed pair had an attractive seam that ran down the front of the leg. Later on, a wool plaid duffel coat in gray stood out. The fabric was given a polyurethane glaze and accessorized by sporty toggle closures, which gave a modern air without feeling too kitschy. Taken as a whole, Fernandez was most effective when the focus was on tailoring and less so when he veered into sporty territory—some pieces had enough visible zippers to be distracting.
