When it comes to quirky, thematic accessories, Charlotte Olympia has the market tapped. For Christmas, designer Charlotte Dellal whipped up a pair of jingle-bell platforms; on Valentine’s Day, it was suede-heart-appliquéd pumps; and for shoppers with a year-round sweet tooth, a gilded gummi-bear-shaped clutch. In the spirit of fashion week (which is basically a holiday in our books), Dellal was inspired by the detail and craftsmanship that go into each new collection. “I took inspiration from a vintage sewing box with needle and thread embroidery, gold loose buttons, and a measuring tape,” Dellal told Style.com. The capsule, titled “Shear Delight,” includes the classic “Kitty” flat, this time with gold buttons for eyes; a black “Pandora” box clutch with a measuring-tape-printed insert; and chunky wedges featuring a spool of thread looped around the base. Debuting exclusively here, the range is a little bit meta and long on charm—we wouldn’t expect anything less.
The Charlotte Olympia Shear Delight collection will be available exclusively at charlotteolympia.com beginning March 3.
Valentine’s Day gets a bad rap, however it’s not the worst excuse to wear pink and red. But who says you can only wear V-Day’s palette and prints once a year? Burberry Prorsum’s Fall ’13 collection proved heart motifs have real staying power, especially when shown on a luxe camel trench or oxblood sweater. Paired with a patent leather pencil skirt, the result is far from cutesy—in fact, it’s even a little sexy. Of course, throwing in a candy-shaped clutch or glittery heels never hurt anyone—we’re all for having a little sartorial fun. New year, new shoes. Just in time for 2014, Charlotte Olympia’s Charlotte Dellal is releasing the latest addition to her Cosmic Collection: a full range of colorful kicks ($795) and matching minaudières ($1,195) dedicated to the Chinese zodiac. The flats—which, along with the clutches, debut exclusively here—are each garnished with gilded, Swarovski Crystal-embellished zodiac symbols (FYI, 2014 is the Year of the Horse), and trimmed with red silk Chinese cords. What’s more is that each pair comes with a zodiac book, so you can learn just what your totem animal says about you. “I’ve always been interested in all things mystical,” offered Dellal of her inspiration. “As with most of my collections, the zodiac is a topic that could easily be adapted into a large dose of fun whilst still being quite classic.” So what’s the designer’s sign? “When I was younger, I remember my father telling me I was a rooster, like him, which I found amusing, as I have always liked chickens,” she recalled. “Apparently, roosters are perfectionists who like to be in control and take pride in their appearance, which half sums me up.”
Charlotte Olympia’s Eastern Cosmic Collection will be available for pre-order from December 28 at www.charlotteolympia.com.
Although “festive dressing” doesn’t typically appear in our sartorial repertoire, we’re guilty of making exceptions for truly great finds. It would be wrong not to add a jingle-bell pump or tinsel-covered clutch to your party ensemble. Ditto for the perfect crimson circle skirt or timeless fir-green lace blouse. Our tip for staying chic throughout the holiday season? Maintain a touch of irony; anything too precious runs the risk of looking like a Christmas ornament. Flying under the Frieze radar last night was jewelry designer Solange Azagury-Partridge, who threw a little soirée to celebrate both the opening of her eclectically designed new shop on Carlos Place in London’s Mayfair neighborhood and the launch of her five-piece collection Metamorphosis.
Attendees included Suzy Menkes, Laura Bailey, and Charlotte Dellal, with whom Azagury-Partridge collaborated with on a range of shoes for Spring ’14. The new collection is—depending on one’s take—sculpture or very extravagant jewelry cases. Each piece is a jewel “box” in a different shape that doesn’t just sit pretty: They all carry wearable charms that are instantly covetable. Included are Through the Keyhole, Azagury-Partridge’s imagination of her ideal boudoir, with elaborate enamel walls, a disco “floor” made from strips of precious stones, and a mirrored globe covered in diamonds. The Secret Garden carries charms like the flute-playing Greek god Pan, an orange tree, and a garden bench. The Ark and the Covenant, The Snake Pit, and Eternal Feminine complete the collection, and each carries a treasure trove of goodies—a skeleton, a giggling baby (below), a Horus eye, and a shoe.
